Physical Description
Time and stress have aged Miranda Elliot. Very pretty and wild looking in her youth with regularly tanned skin, scratches from being outside and wild wavy hair, the healer looks quite different in the present. Her thick dark brown hair is dusted with specks of grey, strands that she has stopped tweaking from her scalp each morning. This hair naturally falls around her shoulders in messy waves. However, when working it is sleeked back into a tight bun or ponytail. Wrinkles have begun to crease her previously smooth skin, created by the stress and lack of sleep she has regularly suffered from. Her dark brown eyes are framed by a few weakly defined wrinkles possibly accelerated by a regular smoking and drinking habit.
Clothing wise, Miranda is always dressed impeccably. Slim black trousers, smart shirts, the ornate robes of the Head Healer and rather obnoxiously tall and thin heeled footwear (it helps when you're an intimidating witch reaching only 5 foot 4 without a heel). Whenever out in public or travelling, Mira tends to wear a hat and cloak or varying colours. Something that may surprise anyone that happens to catch a glimpse, the witch has a rather intricate, magical tattoo of a beautiful dragon snaking from her back and clawing its way down towards her stomach, around her side. It was a spur of the moment addition in an attempt for the twenty something to impress her fiancé at the time. She has never considered getting rid of it.
The middle-aged witch speaks curtly and in a business-like tone the majority of the time. In contrast, her natural accent is somewhat soft when in friendly, nonprofessional company. The mild Devonshire twang clips certain words yet she always works to subdue it.
Personality Description
Mira is somewhat of an extrovert. She is bold, fiery and can be explosive. Arguments can come out of nowhere when in her company and if one questions her judgement; she will often go out of her way to prove them wrong, refusing to back down. Some may believe that Miranda loves a good confrontation, but in fact, she simply loves to back her point. She thrives off of the ability to prove that she is right over others. This causes several problems when working, however. Miranda calls it a healthy competitiveness rather than a love for confrontation. In reality she is competitive, she always strives to be the best at what she’s doing and this competitiveness is driven into her work on a daily basis. She has always been willing to do what it takes to reach the top.
Obviously driving Miranda is also a fierce loyalty. She may be aggressive in her work, say things to ‘drive her staff’ and hand out punishments like they’re Hogwarts housepoints, but she will never do something to harm the a patient or employee, even if she does get a bit carried away. This carries into the ability she has never learned to defend herself magically, always relying instead on her words. Miranda is a talented healer, few compare to her skill, but she is useless with her wand in more other areas of magic.
Miranda is smart and she lets people know it. However, she doesn’t strut around with an air of arrogance (excepting when she’s just proved someone wrong). The healer’s somewhat obsessive drive to do well can make it difficult to have a relationship with her as a friend or more because she regularly has a contrast of priorities. This drive and ability to focus her priorities upon success no doubt made her personality a suitable fit for Durmstrang Institute. It was simply unfortunate her manner wasn’t the perfect fit for the school. Instead she is perfectly suited to her role as Head Healer.
On the inside, Miranda is also softer than she seems. Having been widowed and lost her brother a mere year ago, she has been through the wars and though the scars are still there inside, she has come out fighting. She can be compassionate but tries not to make a habit of it. She would much rather people believe she is a heartless hag. Showing real feelings leads her to feel uncomfortable. She’s scared of the idea of love, not wanting to love a person only to end up alone again.
History
Claire and Jacob Carter had always prayed for a daughter. By 1958, they already had four boys; Leon, Samuel, Jaime and Alexander. When Claire fell pregnant again in April 1962, she was just waiting to have another boy to add to the readily forming army.
The fact that they had so many kids was manageable with Jacob’s job as a Healer in Charge at St Mungo’s Hospital. He was good at his job and had always hoped that his kids would grow up, wanting to get into the medical profession. However, with four aggressive boys that much preferred speeding around the garden on broomsticks, he’d given up on that wish.
On the New Years Eve, 1962, Claire was rushed into hospital screaming, her husband running behind the wheelchair with four shocked looking boys of varying ages. Early on the morning of the 1st, Miranda Louise Carter was brought into the world, delighting, finally, both mother and father.
The delight soon wore off when the parents realised just what a handful their new daughter was. She spent her first year screaming through the nights and sleeping silently during the day. Her next few years were spent running rampage in the house, her older brothers running after her to stop her falling into the lighted fireplace or being hit by a speeding broomstick in the garden. Her parents ended up calling her the monster.
One thing that was apparent, however, was the fact that their daughter was incredibly intelligent and even at the age of 5, she could outwit her 10 year old brothers. Jacob Elliot now had himself a protégée. Due to her father’s great love of her, Miranda excelled, always trying to please him and this continued when she was sent to Hogwarts.
There was a larger proudness felt when she was put in Ravenclaw, the house that was known for turning out geniuses. This obviously pleased her father, and Miranda worked twice as hard, trying to get the best grades she could, excelling in Potions, Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. She was incredibly academic and so did not take much of a part in any wizarding sports such as quidditch. Her first experience on a broomstick had resulted in falling from a great height, breaking her leg and bouncing off a statue on the way down, leaving a permanent scar on her right arm.
Miranda’s father desperately wanted his daughter to become a Healer, and Miranda wanted to please him. Whenever in the presence of healers, she’d watch them carefully questioning every move they made.
When in bed, she’d study her father’s records, potion books and just about anything else she’d be able to get her hands on.
Upon graduating from Hogwarts with fantastic grades, Miranda, wasn’t left with much choice as to a career to go into. She was propelled instantly by her family’s wishes for her into St Mungo’s, training to become a healer.
She was taught hundreds of healing spells, memorizing each one to a perfect standard. She was being taught a more exciting, a more unpredictable method of healing than what her father had drilled into her and she loved it. She felt she’d achieved more than her brothers put together. Two of them worked for the Ministry, one was in a Café and her youngest brother was an Editor for some unknown book publishing company.
Miranda often moved between wards and floors, trying to find her forte. She’d started off in Permanent Spell Damage, but the fact that she was treating those that would never truly recover simply depressed her. Therefore she moved onto Potion and Plant Poisoning. This didn’t exactly agree with her either and therefore, she was soon transferred to the Creature Induced Injuries floor. This she liked. There was a bit more action to be had and she started to thrive.
Two years into being a fully qualified healer, Miranda met a dragon tamer whom had stumbled onto her ward after a nasty burn injury. He was called Jonathon Elliot, he was handsome, 10 years older than her, energetic and what she thought, truly amazing. Much against her better judgement she’d started to date him only to fall deeply in love with him. He was the one love of her life. After 6 months together, they married and she became Mrs Miranda Elliot and a doting wife. It was another 3 years before they had a daughter, Maya Elliot.
In 1991, she’d been working at the Hospital for 10 years when the Healer-in-charge of her ward finally retired. She, among others, went for this position and she was ecstatic upon receiving the news that she’d been given the job. From there it was only up. 5 years later she was promoted to the Charge of her floor. Jonathon was killed by a dragon he’d been trying to catch, leaving Miranda and 9 year old Maya alone.
With her young daughter at school, Miranda found that she was able to push harder in her job. The following couple of years became increasingly difficult, especially during the time of the war. Heading the floor was incredibly stressful as well as dealing with what was going on outside of the four walls.
They made it through, however and she continued to work on the same floor until March 2008 when she was nominated to try for the Head Healer position at St Mungos. This, sadly, was unsuccessful. Therefore, near the end of March, Miranda applied to become the Head Healer at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was delighted when she was taken on, on a probationary period for the rest of the school year.
The experience at Hogwarts hadn’t lasted long. On the 2nd of May 2008 she had seen something she wholeheartedly wishes she could unsee. Upon the stage at the remembering day ceremony her oldest brother had been shot down by a manic seventeen year old boy she had first healed upon her arrival at the school. She decided she couldn’t remain at Hogwarts and therefore moved back to the hospital.
However, after a short time back at St Mungo’s, Miranda wanted out of the country and out of the life she was presently trapped in. With a practically non-existent relationship with her daughter of almost 20, and nothing keeping her where she was, she simply left, not a word to anyone.
After a month of living in Norway where her husband had been buried, Miranda and Durmstrang Institute Crossed paths. Her experience and talent intrigued the board of governors and their tough yet highly successful approach intrigued her. This is where she has been working since.
Unbeknownst to Miranda, however, was what had occurred at St Mungos after her silent leaving. A volatile patient, Daniel Pratt, had attacked a person in healers robes, killed them, and left them in an unidentifiable state. With the lack of the healer in charge around, the identified the corpse as her and had apparently quickly put that matter to bed.
Until Durmstrang had made contact for references. References for an apparently dead witch. Upon the St Mungo’s board finding out the truth, they decided to hand over the references silently and keep quiet over the matter. No one wanted the daily prophet questioning who the victim now scattered in Devon belonged to.
Her Durmstrang career didn’t last a long time. Teaching was not a career that Miranda wanted to remain in. When the position of St Mungo’s Head Healer was due to become available, she leapt at the chance, working her way through tough and gruelling interviews to become one of the youngest Head Healers in the history of St Mungo’s.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them
As Head Healer of St Mungo’s, Miranda will answer only to the Board of Governors. She will take control of the day to day running of the hospital, delegating work through the ranks. She is aware that her job will involve a great deal of paperwork and dealing with disgruntled patients, families and staff.
Different to most Head Healers in the past, however, Miranda will often get her hands dirty and get involved in emergencies and staff shortages. She will be very active in her role and very visible as a boss that makes sure she knows everything going on in her hospital. She will be fair but stern, not accepting staff that don’t pull their weight or are unable to follow protocols.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field
Miranda has bounteous healing and potions knowledge. Therefore she has a great talent in these areas. With previous managerial positions at St Mungo’s Miranda has become very adept at teaching her trade to an excellent level .Healers she has trained have always passed exams excellently and progressed to be very powerful in the profession.
Having always been interested in potions, herbology and magical creatures, Miranda spends much of her spare time building up her knowledge and so rarely needs to consult a book, and gets quite excited with a new form of poison or a potion.
Before leaving the hospital 2 years ago, Miranda has clocked up 27 years working for St Mungo’s. She started from the bottom up, training to be a healer upon leaving school at 18 and spent years working through various departments and fighting her way up the ranks. She has always been ambitious and driven and believes that now she most certainly has enough experience to reach her lifetime goal. She has worked as Healer in Charge on both the creature injuries floor and the spell damage floor and therefore has a great deal of experience both in the job of a healer and as a leader and boss.
Sum up your character in one paragraph
Feisty, straight talking and a credit to her profession. Miranda Storm is not a woman to be reckoned with and even if she has got a heart, one needs to have a damn good reason to find it. She is a woman who is obsessed with her work and making the best out of herself but is now at a point in her life where she is unsure what will come next as she has reached her career goal.
