Plot:The Runes Challenge
Over the winter break, Aileen Reid created an optional challenge for all students taking Runes. The challenge will began when the students returned in January 2010, and it lasted until around May. In the back of the Runes classroom, Aileen posted official clues. Each month, a new clue will replace the previous one.
The first student(s) who solved the challenge in May were rewarded with extra credit points and a surprise. The specific amount of extra credit was left vague on purpose; however, it did not turn a failing grade into an Outstanding.
Students attempted to solve the challenge on their own or in a group. Working in a group meant that the extra credit points was distributed among the participants, and Aileen did not specify whether this will occur evenly.

Additional Information
Schedule
- Beginning of January: The first clue is given and the challenge begins.
- February through April: Students will receive further clues in classes.
- May: Students will have the opportunity to complete the challenge.
The students will be informed of this challenge and be invited to participate toward the end of the year. No official clues, but what they've learned in classes so far will help. Lots!
In-Character Information
In addition to the information above, Aileen gave a brief explanation of what the challenge entailed. She stated that the students would need to find a hidden passageway in the castle that has only recently opened. In May, they needed to retrieve a specific item and give it to her to win.
These are facts and tips that your student would know:
- The challenge was inside the castle, and does not lead anywhere outside of the castle.
- The material in class helped students solve the challenge, but they did need to do research outside of class.
- Failing at any point in the challenge would not put students in any danger.
How This Worked
Each in-character month, Elle posted the latest clue in the Runes classroom board. The clues will built on top of each other, so if your character solved the first one, you can then move on to the next, and so on.
Each clue presented related to what the students have been learning in class, even if they did not roleplay a class thread about it. For example, if Aileen posted a class thread about tapestries for the NEWT-level students, the fourth-years could assume that she has at least mentioned tapestries during a lesson with them as well. Just keep in mind that the NEWT-levels would focus on more advanced aspects of the topic while the fourth-years' lessons would be simpler.
Elle had a few ideas in mind for how each clue can be solved. However, she was open to new interpretations and creativity! Please PM Aileen Reid if you'd like to start a Runes challenge-related thread, and she would be happy to offer suggestions and let you know if you are on the right track. She may use Aileen's account or Deus Ex Machina in your thread to show the results of your student's efforts.
This challenge couldn't be solved in one thread. It lasted until May so that students can RP each clue if they'd like. For those who want a shot at winning the challenge, Elle asks that you RP at least two clue threads leading up to the final attempt in May.
Good luck!
