Salem Witches Institute of Magic
The oldest magic school in the U.S., the Institute is located in Salem, Massachusetts. All magical children in the region are welcome to attend the boarding school and receive a practical magical education approved and supported by the U.S. magical governments.
A common misconception is that the school was or still is only for 'witches'. In truth, however, the school is named for the famous Salem witches and has always been for both boys and girls.
Salem itself is a progressive institution, and classically American. Unlike European magic schools, Salem places a strong emphasis on sport, friendly competition and muggle subjects.
The mascot of the school is the Swedish Shortsnout and the motto is "Operor non alieno flamma congelo lepor lepos." ("Don't forget the Freezing-Flame charm.")
Academics
The student body at Salem is separated into two parts.
- Salem Junior (6th Grade, 7th Grade, and 8th Grade). Presumably this is a continuation of muggle schooling.
- Salem Senior (Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors).
Coursework at Salem is comprises of basic magical education (similar to the Hogwarts core) supplemented by classic 'muggle subjects'. Each year there are a variety of electives offered in vocational subjects and older students can get an introduction to magical law and more intensive muggle studies.
Staff and Student Leadership
Teachers at Salem are most often educated as teaching professionals first, and subject area second. They are addressed as Mr. or Ms. (Some, who hold advanced degrees, insist on being called Dr.)
Salem is run by a Headmaster or Headmistress, and a Dean of Students.
Each class elects a class president and a couple other officers; together they make up a student council.
Halls
Salem Junior and Salem Senior share the same campus, but have separate dormitory halls. Each hall has its own local culture and flavor and traditional rivalries with other Halls. Placement in the halls is more or less luck-of-the-draw, and if a conflict arises, students do have the option to change. Friendly competition between the halls, includes sports competitions.

Sports
Salem plays America's favorite broomsport, Quodpot. In addition to a small Salem League competition between the halls, Salem also fields a highly competitive Varsity team and competes with other American schools. Quidditch isn't played at Salem.
In general, sports are a big part of Salem student life. There are many different sports to choose from for the different seasons, including muggle sports. American Football, broom racing, dueling, baseball, and equestrian sports (on winged horses, of course).
