"The Lycan" is a densely written but fairly innocuous publication from the late 19th century. For those in the know, the book has been used in the past as a kind of guide for professional werewolf hunters.

Featured on the first page.

Content

The book is comprised of seven chapters. It opens to an illustration of the Vitruvian Werewolf.

  • Initial chapters describes the various characteristics of Lycantrophy, and how to identify somebody who might be trying to hide the fact that they are a werewolf.
  • Case studies are featured in order to make obvious how dangerous a werewolf can be to the innocent people around them. These chapters also discuss how a Lycan might behave or be affected by different phases of the moon.
  • The middle chapters are dedicated to the healing of injuries made by werewolves, and how to restrain a person during a full moon should you suspect they have been infected by a bite.
  • There is a also mention of the Wolfsbane potion but the author refers the reader to more thorough texts.
  • Towards the end of the book, there are comprehensive tables and descriptions of the typical werewolf's physical traits: average speed, strength, aggressiveness, and habits.
  • Distinctions are made between male and female Lycans. The information is calculated in a frank and impersonal fashion.

"The Lycan" is drawn to an end as the author states that there should be many more studies made of Lycantrophy in order to protect against it.
