Azkaban

Azkaban is a prison located on an island in the middle of the North Sea that serves the magical community of Great Britain. Using certain charms, the prison is hidden from the muggle world, and is unplottable. The the prison serve the whole of wizarding Britain.

Azkaban gained a reputation as a horrible place, mostly due to the prison's former guards: Dementors, foul creatures that suck the happiness out of the victim and cause great suffering to those in their proximity. Because of this, most of the prisoners at the time eventually went insane and slowly died under the Dementors' influence. Since 1717, using any of the three Unforgivable Curses on another human being has carried a punishment of a life sentence in Azkaban (unless there is sufficient evidence that the caster did so under the influence of the Imperius Curse, or legal exceptions made by the Ministry of Magic as in the case of Aurors in the First Wizarding War).

Visitors

Visiting Azkaban is neither easy nor pleasant.

• Law Enforcement and Ministry of Magic Personnel on Official Business: Can visit prisoners at any time with the proper clearance from Level Two.
• Prisoners' Legal Counsel: Advance notice is required and permission granted from Level Two.
• Family: Immediate, legal family may visit during restricted and limited visiting days.

Post

Owls don't deliver to Azkaban. Mail is delivered via Level Two at the Ministry of Magic. Letters may be screened and letter-writing and letter-receiving is a guarded privilege for inmates.

Travelling to Azkaban

• Azkaban is Unplottable.
• Apparition is not possible.
• It is not connected to the Floo Network.
• The only way in or out is via an awful awful ferry from Charon's Point, on a remote Northumberland Island.
• It is possible to get there by broom, but this is illegal.
  • Ministry officials with the right clearance can get there by broom on quick notice.

Culture

There is a belief, according to Oscar Truemane that werewolves are treated poorly in Azkaban. [1]
