Arcturus Hollingbury is Healer-in-Charge of the Potions and Plant Poisoning floor at St. Mungo's Hospital. He is somewhat known for his half-white hair and unconventional interests in healing techniques. Above all he has a reputation for his dedication to being a Healer with two decades of experience after going straight from Hogwarts to St Mungo's.

He is by blood part-Greek and does speak the language fluently, making it no secret. Other things he does not shy away from letting people know is his near-workaholic adherence to his job, only tempered by his partner Cepheus Gamp and his family, his tenacity and attention to detail with his job, and the ability to calculate all of Golpalott's Laws in his head on the spot.

Predictably he was in Ravenclaw when in Hogwarts. He had an older sister, Alethea Hollingbury who fell during the Ministry coup in the Second Wizarding War. One of Arcturus' best friends is Lyra Avery, a childhood friend from Hogwarts.

His main pastime is tap dance and he masquerades as a muggle with a dance studio that uploads their performances to YouTube. His muggle persona is a considerably more outgoing personality that goes by the name of Zachary Enfield.

One of his primary favourite bands is The Wild Aethonans.

Family

His father Mordecai Hollingbury works in the Improper Use of Magic Office in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, while his mother Lydia Hollingbury is a housewife, formerly part of the Department of Magical Transportation. Because of his mother, blood status discrimination is a major pet peeve of his.

His sister Alethea was an Auror; she died in August 1997 during the fall of the Ministry.

Technically he has an aunt, Morgana Hollingbury, and he has some idea of her existence despite being disowned from the Hollingbury family. She looks out for him in her own way.

Arcturus owns a pet kneazle named Rustle.

The Hollingburys have always been a half-blood family that for some reason circulates around every few generations to having Greek family members. They tend towards a small number and live in relative peace. No one knows if their name comes from the same place in Brighton and Hove but they certainly don't live there anymore, if they did at all.

Appearance/Distinguishing Features

Arcturus stands out by way of his shoulder-length split dark brown (almost black) and white hair in every social situation fathomable to any man. Though his hair is directly split down the middle, he has opted for a side parting instead, blending locks of both colours. The white does not appear natural, which tends to lend to the assumption that he dyed it as a fashion statement. The white hair is in fact the result of an irreversible hex from his sister after they had an argument.

Beyond the hair he is notably a picture of rested calm. While on the thin side he does not lack sinew and a healthy amount of body fat, kept fit by his hobbies of dancing, occasional swimming and long walks. His characteristic hair frames sunken dark brown eyes that project a keen interest for the world around him. He's always had trouble growing proper facial hair but of late has been alright with managing it as a little stubble.

He stands at 5’10” or 177.8 cm and maintains a quiet, calming presence by default. He favours soothing shades of green and calm blues along with darker more neutral colours. Arcturus favours functionality over form, leaving his work appearance to be extremely practical with a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Formal wear includes dress shirts with the top button undone (he was never really one for ties) and waistcoats, though it doesn't mean he'll restrict this to formal looks only. With casual wear his wardrobe leans towards Muggle fashions of younger generations such as hooded sweatshirts and t-shirts with long sleeves. Denim is a huge feature for any trousers in this regard.

When outside he pulls on a scarf and dark grey longcoat that very much accentuates his thin, tall form and gives him a bit more bulk.

Because of his casual fashion he blends in with Muggles exceedingly easily, a result of living on a Muggle street for as long as he can remember before moving out in his thirties.

He also has a wand holster attached to his left wrist. It was made in Malaysia and gifted to him by friends whilst he was there with his mother. With the exception of showers, performances and sleep, he is never without it.

Personality

Patient, quiet, keen - three words anyone would immediately describe him on first meeting. Arcturus appears a reserved individual at first but can never help showing that he is interested in the world and people around him. This and his generally altruistic, hopeful outlook balance out what would appear to be a shy wallflower. Despite events that have placed him under great stress time and time again he tends to keep his chin up and maintain good spirits.

While this is genuine, the reasons are twofold: As Healer he holds himself to being a pillar of security and strength for others to lean on, and he tries to prevent himself from falling into depressive moods. He is no optimist - his ideals list towards the pragmatic side - but he keeps it up to ensure people around him do not feel that he is failing. When he does crash, either from emotional fatigue or physical exhaustion, he shows his more cynical side and does not refrain from snark as a coping mechanism.

Arcturus as a cynic is snippy, tetchy. He has a high tolerance for people's general bullshittery but outside of work he's not afraid of making his feelings known when he's annoyed. He knows this all too well and keeps his mouth shut most of the time so as not to be insensitive, though anyone can rest assured that he will still keep making remarks in his head.

He is diligent, meticulous, organised and critical, always questioning why he does things instead of taking them at face value. His work requires these qualities, and of course as a Healer he takes his work extremely seriously. He'll still make Healer jokes from time to time but they tend on the sparse side compared to his colleagues.

His sense of humour is more of the self-deprecating sort, a trait all of the Hollingbury family shares in their quest to appear unseeming, unthreatening, as well as dry wit and smart wordplay. Arcturus is known to have an analytical mind but he appreciates the arts outside of a logical perspective - one that has been eventually cultivated thanks to the help of his friends in his adult life.

Arcturus is driven by an almost self-sacrificial tendency to help others in need. He will put others above himself and forget about his state in the process, oftentimes needing a gentle nudge to take care of himself. He's been getting better over this for the past few years but sometimes can still lapse into it, especially when he fights to keep people alive no matter what they are.

If there's one thing Arcturus isn't mild about, it's decadence. He hates excessive indulgence and outward displays of it, and will openly show his disdain for class divide. He defaults to strong dislike for the outwardly wealthy and takes a long time to blunt his edge around them.

History

Childhood

Arcturus went to a Muggle preschool before going to Hogwarts. He doesn't remember much of his time here but it was for the benefit of keeping the family's magical nature a secret while living in a heavily Muggle area. He did not make lasting friendships as he wanted friends like him.

Hogwarts

Once enrolled at Hogwarts he was immediately sorted to Ravenclaw unsurprisingly. He preferred the waarmth and comfort of his commonroom and the library, awed by the amount of books on magical knowledge that he did not normally have access to. He was not a fan of duelling initially, and notably managed to dislocate his jaw on his very first flying lesson, causing him to swear off brooms for the rest of his life.

He excelled in Potions, Herbology and Charms, clever where it was needed and hardworking when he needed to solve things. He sometimes found himself the go-to for homework help; he didn't always like the attention. He cared very little about the existence of Harry Potter, though he was more irritated at people making everything about him overblown than the boy himself, relating a little to himself not wanting attention. Defence Against the Dark Arts was also something he was decent at and Transfiguration made him work for his keep.

Throughout his time at Hogwarts he tended to hang out most with Slytherin Lyra Avery, Gryffindor Sebastian Cheverell and Slytherin Demarcus Bradley. Jokingly called the 'Interhouse Friends' at times, these times have left him with good memories.

With his OWLs he scored Es in everything save Divination, Care of Magical Creatures and History of Magic. Knowing what he was good at, he blazed through the rest of the other subjects once he had dropped those three, especially getting Os in Potions, Charms, Herbology and Defence Against the Dark Arts.

He attributes his interest and knowledge in Defence thanks to Dumbledore's Army. When the Ministry fell on August 1 1997, the death of his sister Alethea shook the entire family and the following events saw them separate - Arcturus stuck at Hogwarts, Mordecai stuck at the Ministry and Lydia hastily evacuating to Greece before she was rounded up by the Ministry at Mordecai's insistence. The Hollingburys did not escape scrutiny due to being halfblood and Arcturus lost many friends, turning him into the more cynical person he is today.

Arcturus was one of those who spoke out against the Death Eaters' control over the school in his seventh year and has ended up with scars from this period of time. He also shed his dislike for duelling with the express intention of fighting to protect, which he continues to uphold to this day. The Battle of Hogwarts was the biggest event in his life that turned him into a pragmatic realist, where his friend Demarcus Bradley, who had been distancing gradually, tried to kill him due to him being the only halfblood in their friend group. He would have very nearly succeeded if Lyra and Sebastian had not gotten to Arcturus in time and taken him to the infirmary. This event left a fair amount of trauma on Arcturus, enough for his mind to repress the memories to protect him. Physically he has a scar across his abdomen from the attempt; it does not hurt nor cause him pain, but he doesn't like being touched there.

Early Adulthood

Due to Alethea's death and the way his father was treated at the Ministry, Arcturus has a lifelong distrust of the Ministry in general and holds it in high disdain. In addition his near-escape with death made him realise he never wanted anyone else to experience what he had, and therefore took up an internship at St Mungo's. Arcturus took to it like a fish to water and once he qualified to be a full Healer in 2006 he has never stopped working there since.

2010-2012

Arcturus fell into a destructive loop of solidifying his identity, worsened by being a victim of dementors that allowed his worst memories from the Battle of Hogwarts to shake his mind up. It took some work between friends, colleagues and withdrawing himself to try and figure out what he needed to straighten out.

He took up tap dance and found some solace with a Muggle crowd, enjoying the anonymity and being able to be more himself under the Muggle persona of Zachary Enfield. He does enjoy the split identity, though he doesn't stay in it for long since it tires him out mentally.

2013-2017

The end of 2012 saw Arcturus taking a second chance with his former boyfriend Cepheus Gamp. With the blessings of his parents one month into the relationship, they continued to be together and as of 2018 the relationship is still going strong. Despite Arcturus’ concerns over being in the right place and time, he was able to continue working on recovering and perhaps it was Cepheus’ presence that also enabled him to improve mentally as well as physically.

Given that Arcturus was now spending more time with Cepheus, the topic of moving out from 277b did come up, but Arcturus’ concern of splitting the rent with his housemate and not inconveniencing her with the consequences prevented him from following through with the decision. Eventually when Elixa informed him that she was moving out to study in Sweden in 2013, she took the opportunity to tell him finally that he should take this as the cue to move in with Cepheus and he complied.

In the meantime Arcturus continued his personal research into the various projects he has been working on for years. Several projects of his have been discontinued and aborted entirely; others have been incorporated into his healing work.

The most relevant research he has done is using blood-related potions to deduce the poisons and toxins ingested or otherwise entered the body. Arcturus has now streamlined the process and has been able to mass-produce the potions needed with an entire documentation included, along with formulae for adjusting doses to patients. This research has been extended to the entire floor for Healers to access freely.

Amidst all the projects ongoing, Arcturus’ skill with being able to temper himself and use water to calm his emotions gave him the idea of manipulating water to help in the healing process. He is able to soothe humours in the body with this ability now, though he does not do it without the explicit permission of the patient or their closest of kin, and also uses it to quicken the process of taking blood from his patient as well as needing only very few drops to achieve his needs. This makes him an effective healer and allows him to encourage a patient to stay calm as he works due to the cooling, soothing effect on the body. Despite the efficacy of his work his detractors include this technique as a point against him.

For the most part Arcturus has defended against the opposition with studies of traditional Chinese medicine and treatments that have helped to improve his technique, but he has also proven to be efficient and competent at his work as well as helpful towards his colleagues. He has grown more concerned about mental health and while he does not consider himself an expert or authorised to give advice he looks out for his colleagues at least. Somewhere between 2014-2015 Arcturus trained two Healers one after the other as his predecessor saw fit for him to be assigned training duties.

Outside of work Arcturus continued with his recreational hobbies, the main one being tap dance with his Muggle dance studio slash company. He has exponentially improved at tap dance and is part of the studio’s dance group, taking part in performances that get recorded and uploaded on YouTube as part showcase and part advertising. He temporarily dyes his white hair and makes himself up a little to appear dissimilar (though not entirely) to his actual self, and goes by the Muggle identity of Zachary Enfield. Most of his friends do not know this side gig, the only people perhaps being Elixa Mordent and Cepheus Gamp.

Because of this interest in music and performances he attended more musical and theatrical performances alongside Cepheus and his parents, and Cepheus by default was invited to his dance performances. Otherwise they divide their time wisely between social gatherings and having time to be alone together, or even together but alone.

Though it has been some time since Arc experienced dementing and has had treatment since then, he still has residual effects and PTSD from it. He doesn’t travel alone in the dark or at night anymore and still has nightmares especially when stressed or unwell. He has some days when he gets sudden strikes of bad memories and may have a panic attack from it, which he mitigates by taking the day off as he recognises the high risk affecting his work, and simply tries to make his day better by doing something fun to take his mind off it.

While Arc has not fully recovered from his depression and the effects of being demented, he is able to manage it healthily by being open, transparent and communicative with Cepheus. His mental health largely improved over the five years. He still has some days when he lapses but takes it in his stride and works around it, greatly aided by Cepheus' presence and companionship.

In 2017 Mordecai was injured in a Futurist attack that left him with a limp and the required use of a walking cane. Some months later Cepheus was injured in an incident with the Giants; fortunately the only consequence from that after recovery was a strong dislike for confined spaces. As a result Arcturus was largely stressed out for most of the year worrying about the wellbeing of his loved ones, leading to him being more aggressive over safety and much firmer with his own decisions when it came to security. He stops short of being paranoid for his loved ones due to having experienced his father’s own (usually justified) paranoia, but only just.

As of November 2017 the Head of Potions and Plant Poisoning recommended Arcturus to take over their position. Arcturus, who largely never considered himself being in that position, has yet to make the decision although he has had support from most of the floor. Not everyone on the floor has reacted positively to this however, the most vocal being Philemius Gawmdrey who largely believes that Arcturus’ methods are a sacrilege to Healer practice and enable high risk of malpractice, who leads a minority group opposing the recommendation.

In December 2017, Arcturus is appointed as Healer-in-Charge, much to the displeasure of his loudest opposition.

2018

Arcturus and Cepheus are celebrating their birthdays, with Arcturus still adapting to his new position.

Interests

Potioneer

Arcturus would not consider himself a pioneer with potions, but preferring to reiterate and improve concoctions instead. His ability to calculate potion formulae quickly in his head has been a great help with this in regard, and thanks to his love for efficiency he has found ways to streamline potion production. He is content with this as the challenge of logistics is one he enjoys.

Healing

Arcturus looks into techniques employed by other cultures as well as Muggle studies. While he does not employ much of the latter given the vast differences in foundation between the two, he finds Muggle techniques fascinating and tries to repurpose them in magical healing if they can benefit others.

Duelist

Arcturus is not a trained duelist per se. His duelling skills come from surviving the Second Wizarding War and thus he is a very rough-and-ready duelist, being more disorganised but chaotic in what he can deploy. He practises duelling with his father on the regular, keeping his skills and reflexes fresh. He also uses his water manipulation in tandem, being able to do both at the same time if needed and using it as a trump card if he is disarmed.

While he is not on the same level as an Auror, his unpredictability and firsthand experience coupled with his formidable knowledge of the human body makes him a flexible and reasonably threatening opponent. He however will never attack first, preferring to act in self-defence.

Water Manipulation

Somewhere in 2012 Arcturus discovered his ability to accidentally freeze water in the air when in emotional turmoil could be controlled - at least, with the right techniques. He spent months trying to figure things out until Adrianna Xin gave him a tip on looking into the way other cultures practised magic. He has become fairly proficient, able to manipulate the amount of water in a basic glass, by using an evil eye amulet, a gift from his late maternal grandmother, as a focus outside of his wand. Arcturus generally doesn't talk about this, but he uses it in potion-making to distribute water content evenly as well as water as an external healing tool to soothe the healing process for patients.

Bloodwork

Among other things he is known for, Arcturus carries around an old suitcase he calls his "bloodwork" case. It carries a variety of blood-related potions, a few small bowls and measuring instruments, and certain reagents he uses to separate and test blood. He has taken an interest in using blood to deduce what the patient has possibly ingested, mostly when patients are reluctant to tell him. He's also studied bloodletting and using leeches, although he finds it less...modern.

The suitcase works as a portable cabinet with everything strapped to the walls of the suitcase firmly. Supposedly there are books inside the suitcase as well; the case can extend in the middle to reveal a hidden and much larger magical compartment to carry 2-3 notebooks that contain his research for reference.

The contents of the case include:

• Murtlap Essence (for healing over exit wounds made to allow blood to flow for testing)
• A poison isolating agent (separates blood from any possibly toxic substance, including alcohol)
• Poison indicators (changes colour in the presence of poisons; certain colours can indicate the strength of the poison as well)
• Poison property testers
• Calming Draught (prevents patients from hurting themselves and stops them from getting too overexcited)
• Sleeping Potion (very small dose carefully measured out for the patient to only sleep for about 5-10 minutes)
• Wound-cleaning potion

Most of the potions he has are carefully retrieved recipes from old books and experimented so that they're safer and easier to make.

While the concept of "blood tests" exists in the Muggle medical field, Arcturus' techniques are based around potions and magical methods, and does not test for the same results that Muggle blood tests do.

His Sleeping Potion is very carefully regulated after he had to deal with a serious case of Sleeping Potion Overdose, also known as "Johann Storm".
