Arcturus Hollingbury is a Healer working on the 3rd Floor of St. Mungo's Hospital. He has a tendency to nickname the floor the 3P, and has a reputation for being asexual due to his lack of relationship with anyone (see Relationships) and the best poker face the hospital has on offer. He is somewhat unconventional for having an interest in Muggle techniques of treating his patients.

Speaks Greek fluently and can read Latin. Lousy French. Enjoys Celtic music in general, listens to an Irish wizarding folk band called The Wild Aethonans on the radio.

Family

His father Mordecai Hollingbury works in the Improper Use of Magic Office in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, while his mother Lydia Hollingbury is a housewife, formerly part of the Department of Magical Transportation. Because of his mother, he generally has anti-blood status discrimination as a major pet peeve of his.

His sister Alethea was an Auror; she died in August 1997 during the fall of the Ministry. He still visits her grave most Sundays.

Technically he has an aunt, Morgana Hollingbury, but he has no idea of her existence as she's considered disowned from the Hollingbury family.

Arcturus owns a pet kneazle called Rustle.

Relationships

Arcturus implies a rather awkward experience with girls in Hogwarts which led to his lack of romantic/sexual relationships with anyone for roughly 15 years. A healer-patient relationship with Johann Storm eventually evolved into something more romantic, but left it hanging between April-September 2010 due to leaving abruptly for Malaysia with his mother.

After his return, he seems to have regrets about his previous relationship while possibly getting involved with Elixa Mordent.

His Hair

Arcturus' split hair is a result of irreversible spell damage from a curse that his sister cast and accidentally hit one side of his head. The white hair does not grow, so he cuts the black side to match the white and never cuts any of the white hair. It is unnaturally white in colour and does not look like dye, although the roots down his neck are still a little black.

Arm Wand Holster

Arc's wand holster is located on his left forearm, much like an archer's brace. Made of leather and has two straps that act like small tentacles near either end, wrapping themselves around the wand whenever it's returned to the holder automatically to keep it in place. When the wand is stored, it's parallel to his arm.

He was given this wand holster by his friends in Malaysia before he left because of his habit of storing his wand in his sleeve. It has Malaysian indigenous patterns on it, and can be seen fully if he ever rolls his sleeves up. Both ends are short of his wrist and elbow, giving his elbow and wrist space to bend. The holster is waterproof.

Potion and Poison Research

Arcturus Hollingbury is rather passionate with his potion and poison research, and actively works on various experiments when he's not seeing to patients. Most of his experiments are initiatives he takes up on his own to do, usually "inspired" by cases he's dealt with in the hospital that proposes a challenge to him.

Previous work includes Sleeping Potion Overdose. His current research is the magical properties of blood and uses of blood in healing.

Potion Dilution Factor

Dilution factor can be summed up as "the amount by which a potion is diluted by an appropriate solvent such as water, taking into factors such as potion dilution resistance and 'dilution stacking', in order to administer the correct concentration of potion suitable for the severity of the patient's condition". Arcturus has studied enough of it to be able to do the calculations in his head, and considers it vital knowledge in order to mix the correct remedy without having to rely on the apothecary to judge the amount of potion required in a specific situation. This also has to take into account the strength of separate poisons in a blended poison, thus a blended antidote can be customised in concentration to counter the strength of the poison as per Golpalott's Third Law.

As far as he knows, this is knowledge in very advanced potion books, but it's not usually prioritised. Arcturus is looking to streamline the calculations to something much easier to figure out so that the hospital doesn't make a loss on having its potion ingredients used up in attempts to neutralise customised blended poisons.

Sicknesses of the Mind and Substance Abuse

With references to Muggle treatment as well as magical treatment. Ongoing. Private, personal project as he considers "sicknesses of the mind" a sort of poison that must be controlled, but thinks that the hospital won't agree with him on that definition and would just send patients to Magical Bugs and Diseases.

Corynthian Eel Research

One of Arc's projects is using corynthian eel slime in increasing the effectiveness of healing potions and salves. He has yet to elaborate on this.

Arcturus' Bloodwork Case

Among other things he is known for, Arcturus carries around an old suitcase he calls his "bloodwork" case. It carries a variety of blood-related potions, a few small bowls and measuring instruments, and certain reagents he uses to separate and test blood. He has taken an interest in using blood to deduce what the patient has possibly ingested, mostly when patients are reluctant to tell him. He's also studied bloodletting and using leeches, although he finds it less...modern.

The suitcase works as a portable cabinet with everything strapped to the walls of the suitcase firmly. Supposedly there are books inside the suitcase as well; the case can extend in the middle to reveal a hidden and much larger magical compartment to carry 2-3 notebooks that contain his research for reference.

The contents of the case include:

  • Murtlap Essence (for healing over exit wounds made to allow blood to flow for testing)
  • A poison isolating agent (separates blood from any possibly toxic substance, including alcohol)
  • Poison indicators (changes colour in the presence of poisons; certain colours can indicate the strength of the poison as well)
  • Poison property testers
  • Calming Draught (prevents patients from hurting themselves and stops them from getting too overexcited)
  • Sleeping Potion (very small dose carefully measured out for the patient to only sleep for about 5-10 minutes)
  • Wound-cleaning potion

Most of the potions he has are carefully retrieved recipes from old books and experimented so that they're safer and easier to make.

While the concept of "blood tests" exists in the Muggle medical field, Arcturus' techniques are based around potions and magical methods, and does not test for the same results that Muggle blood tests do.

Note: His Sleeping Potion is very carefully regulated after he had to deal with a serious case of Sleeping Potion Overdose, also known as "Johann Storm".

The Bloodwork Case has been mentioned in The Old Climbing Tree with Jonquil Enright.

Malaysian Research

Arcturus seeks to combine what he's learned from Malaysia and use it in England, including various plant ingredients that are classified as goods that can be traded. But first he has to liaise with Katie Leung, his contact in MAPPERS, with some help from Johann Storm.

Liquid Control

After failure regarding developing the Muscle Freeze Charm, Arcturus moved on to addressing a common problem (for him) that he encounters while taking blood - having the blood flow out of an exit without touching the skin, or anything else. He finds the Muggle technique of using tubes messy and stressful for both patient and healer.

So far he's working on controlling liquids by forming them into balls that float until at his command they drop into a container. The degree of success remains unknown.

Uses of Blood in Magic

Post-Malaysia he has picked up knowledge on the study of blood being used in magic due to its potent powers. Though other cultures consider the use of blood magic as an area of the Dark Arts, Arcturus believes that blood has its place in the field of healing. He currently uses blood to quickly isolate poisons and toxins for identification in his patients, especially to check if they are clean of accidentally ingested poisons.

Arcturus doesn't believe in the concept of a 'biohazard' (he thinks germs sound like 'invisible tiny biting demons' and even if that silly concept is true then they couldn't possibly affect wizarding folk), but is always quick to clean up any spilled blood to prevent others from getting to it first. He also immediately destroys the blood samples he gains once he's done testing, for confidentiality purposes.
