Val Sheldrake is a bartender with expensive taste and shallow pockets.
He is brighter than he lets on, often playing the flirty and chatty role of a rakish barman. Whatever it takes to get a good tip or some company for the night, after closing hours.
His sociable ways are far more subdued - bordering on grouchy - when there isn't a customer to serve. He wants to be able to afford a better lifestyle, and has resorted to dealing Muse under the counter for those in the know.
Val often claims to be working on a novel, having always aspired to be a writer.
History
The only child of a single mother, Valerius was orphaned shortly before he graduated from Hogwarts. His grief altered him - once a bright and ambitious young wizard, Val became someone who seemed to take life day-to-day without much thought for the long run of things.
He worked as a waiter for a few years, whilst struggling to get some of his prose published. A couple of short stories here and there didn't pay the bills, though.
Bartending paid better than bussing tables and this was what Val eventually settled on - working at bars around Brighton and then London, where he settled on The Black Boar.
