Bagnold Funeral Home
Located at 666 South Side Diagon Alley. Owned and run by Dervla Bagnold.
Bagnold Funeral Home rests on the far end of Diagon Alley, the last building on a long row of shops. It was once a large home, but has been converted into many businesses over time. For the last six or more years it has served as a funeral home for wizarding Britain.
The business has a conflicting reputation. While reports in direct relation to service are overwhelming positive, the funeral home is also shrouded in rumors dating back to the owner's dismissal from the ministry for Necromancy. Customers report Dervla Bagnold as pleasant to work with (if a bit too eager). The home has very reasonable prices and is a popular option among the middle and lower class of wizarding Britain.
The building has four floors (including the basement).
The funeral home has many security measures. Magical wards to prevent illegal entry, a few alarms, etc. There is also a lot of runic work used to prevent spirits from haunting the inside of the home. The runes also double as a way to silence the spirits of the people whose bodies Dervla uses for her necromancy experimentation.
The Basement
The basement is the embalming room (and also doubles as Dervla's laboratory).
The basement of Bagnold Funeral Home serves as the embalming room, crematorium, and also as Dervla's laboratory. The floors are a slate gray, linoleum tile for easy clean up. There is a casket lift by the stair case used to move bodies between the floors. There is also a cauldron used to brew embalming potions as well as a large, multi-tier shelf full of potions ingredients used in body preparation. Directly to the left of the stair case is the door to the crematorium room. The cremation oven has two chambers. In this room is a hidden door to the laboratory. There is also a large, steel, locked & warded door into Dervla's laboratory.
Dervla's laboratory has an interesting set up. Considering that the ministry regularly investigates, the room appears to be full of old funeral home equipment, various items, junk, etc. She claims the large, reinforced doors are to keep meddlesome folks out. (And considering regular breaking and entering, it is a viable reason.) The room appears creepy, cluttered, and unused. There is a trap door in the floor which goes into a large, concrete room dug out for the purpose of necromancy experiments. The trap door is hidden beneath a few old, large, porcelain embalming tables. It can only be accessed by a very specific set of runes which must be drawn in a very specific place.
First Floor (UK: Ground Floor)
The first and second floors conduct business. There are multiple rooms for funeral services in varying size. The first floor also has a casket & urn showroom. There is a large storage/clearance room on the second floor. There are also a few public toilets.
The first floor of the funeral home sees the most business. The entry way is usually decorated with flowers and has view of the large spiral staircase. To the left of the front door is a large casket and urn showroom, as well as a public bathroom, Dervla's office, and her private bathroom. The caskets in the show room change out as they are sold or as the seasons change. They come from simple wooden boxes to extravagant pieces. (Though the simpler caskets sell better and she keeps more in stock.) There is a wall of shelves lined with beautiful urns for the use of storing the remains of a cremated loved one. These urns vary in material- from porcelain, to glass, to types of wood and metal- something for every personality and each decorated differently.
To the right of the front door are two funeral rooms. The one in the front of the house is for hosting large funerals, and the one in the back is for smaller funerals/viewings/receivings. There is a large, shared coat room for both funeral rooms. Bodies are delivered and sent out through the rear doors of the casket lift. Carriages can bring bodies by for preparation, and those prepared for burial are loaded out of the casket lift from there after funeral services have concluded.
Second Floor (UK First Floor)
The second floor of the funeral home is not used nearly as often as the first. When she is particularly busy she will utilize the extra funeral rooms. The extra large room is usually used by those who were popular in the community, the few purebloods, or for events honoring law enforcement, etc. The small funeral room sees much more use, however, as most with the money or need for a large memorial choose larger funeral homes to do business with. This floor also has a storage room where old records are kept. It also has a small display of clearance caskets/urns or "as is" items. (Broken caskets, chipped urns, etc.) There is another public restroom on this floor.
Third Floor (UK Second Floor)
The third floor is attic space converted into Dervla's flat. There is a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen area, small sitting area, as well as a lot of bookshelves. These doors are locked and warded.
The third floor serves as Dervla's living area. The spiral staircase opens up onto a platform. The door is locked multiple times as well as warded and protected by runes. (She's a tad paranoid.) Upon entering the home, one can see her catty-cornered furniture near the large wood stove for heat. To the right of the entrance is her bedroom, which empties into a large bathroom. The bathroom can also be reached by the living area. Off to the side of her kitchen area is a corner lined with shelves, and the shelves are overflowing with books. Nefarious to common titles line the shelves. She also has a kitchen and dining area. There is a small table that seats four, counters, a double sink, an icebox, as well as a cooking stove. The home decor is obviously that of someone raised pureblood and in the wizarding world, it also looks very lived in and is generally cluttered and in need of a good clean.
