Clasp Flare
The shown Clasp Flare was crafted to contain Egyptian magic, but to also react to those of European origin, custom-made for Abigail Reid
A Clasp Flare is a tool for capturing and measuring uncontrolled or free-flowing magical oddities with magical combustion. With a flame, the combustion absorbs the magic into the wick of the lamp and can also reverse or nullify the effects of the magic. The flame begins on the exposed end of the wick and travels down to the bottom, where the flame is extinguished and the captured magic is turned to ash that is deposited into the bottom of the container.
The ash can then be used for various purposes, usually for testing. What the object itself can detect is only limited by the person who made it, the abilities of the the person experimenting on the ash, and how much magic/ash was collected.
Crafting
The wick and other materials of the lamp are specially created with the use of potions combined with other crafts, such as metallurgy, glass blowing, welding, forging, and etc, and the materials can be chosen to be attuned to specific types of magic, depending on what purpose the user wishes for it. The latter process is helpful, but not always necessary for crafting.
The object itself is specifically measured and, (often mathematically,) decorated in runes. They are the main element of the device that dictates the type of magic a flare will detect, capture, and collect. They do not need to be seen, but must be meticulously merged with the object in some form of fashion.
The flexibility of this process has led to some liberal experimentation and theories into the field of Clasp Fares where the object itself could, in fact, be a rune, and it is currently theorized that it could even be a series of runes, with the proper Arithmancy, mathematical, and architectural application.
How to Use
The Clasp Flares come in a variety of types, sizes, and makes, able to be hung from the ceiling or stored in a pocket and utilized at the size of a small skater's lamp, but they all are used and maintained the same way.
They are to be hung, placed, or held within the vicinity of the magical oddity and they will begin collecting ash. When their wicks burn up, or the container is filled, the wick must be replaced and/or the container emptied, to be used again.
While the object has many practical uses it is not able to contain or capture all magical occurrences, especially those it considers foreign. For instance, if a clasp flare was made with European principals, materials, and magic, it may have no use on a magical occurrence caused by Middle Eastern magic. This makes a Clasp Flare rather sensitive.
