The first years are late coming to the feast after having capsized into the lake. The new Caretaker, Tipper, brings out the Sorting Hat, but the hat does not sing or move. Then, it does not sort. Confusion ensues. Ignan Storm attempts to sort the students himself and is met with protests. The first years are temporarily divided up between the four houses.
