Fornax
Spell Name: Furnace Spell
Incantation: Fornax
Pronunciation: FOR-nax
Spell Branch: Transfiguration
Magical Discipline(s):
Appearance: The spell itself is invisible, though it requires a steady hand and consistent casting to keep the heating even.
Description: Fornax is a metallurgical heating spell meant for use on raw materials in the process of creating magical artifacts. Unlike heating or drying charms, which add warmth primarily from the outside, fornax breaks down certain properties of its subject to create tremendous heat from the inside out. Temperature continues to rise the longer the spell is cast, ranging from 400 to almost 2,000 °C.
Regulations: Controlled
Skill Level: Advanced
Etymology: From the Latin fornax, meaning a furnace, oven, or kiln.
References:
- Alvis Norling, the son of craftsmen, mentions this spell on his Transfiguration midterm.[1]
Notes:
- Fornax is a highly specialized charm primarily used by smiths, artificers, and other item crafters. It tends to be passed down through apprenticeship and is not widely taught, partially because it is very dangerous unless its caster is properly trained. It is mostly used on metals, but can also be applied to glass-work and pottery.
- It is illegal to use on any living creature. Its use against a human warrants an automatic murder charge and a grisly one at that.
