Persephone Woolfe

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Percy's an unlikely vampire, as quirky as her fashion sense. She's a child stuck in the body of a slightly older child for the last few hundred years, immature and reckless, yet those hundreds of years have had their affect and Percy is surprisingly wise. Her favourite pastime is causing chaos, she'll do anything not to be bored. The definition of chaotic neutral, Persephone's unreliable and unpredictable, nobody's quite sure what side she's on.

Behind the name

  • Persephone: the greek goddess of spring time who was kidnapped by Hades and became queen of the underworld. Persephone hates to be called by her full name and goes by Percy. Her husband Tedros used to call her Sephie and after his death Percy refuses to let anyone call her that either. Tedros used to draw parallels between the Persephone myth and Percy's turning.
  • Clara: meaning bright, Percy finds this hilarious considering how she can't actually go in the sunlight.
  • Woolfe: After marrying Tedros, Persephone considered taking his surname Marino, but she thought having the surname Woolfe when she was a vampire (what with the vampire/werewolf rivalry) was to funny a situation to just give up. Tedros agreed wholeheartedly.

Appearance

  • Eyes: light brown, narrow
  • Eyebrows: a few shades lighter than her hair, full and straight
  • Skin: paler than pale
  • Lips: Bow shape, pale pink
  • Hair: curly dark brown, black in some lighting
  • Body shape: the slight build vampires tend to have
  • Height: roughly 5 foot 3 inches
  • Distinguishing features: Fangs

Fashion sense: A bizarre mixture of all the different styles that have been popular since she was born but always with comfort a primary concern. She's forgone the corsets of the past but still regularly wears other accessories and items of clothing she's collected over the centuries. Gait: Completely silent footsteps, a bit of a child in that if there's a wall she'll walk on top of it or a paved street and she'll avoid the cracks Mannerisms: Constant fidgeting and a tendency to collect 'souvenirs'. Sometimes signs of other times will pop up, the occasional curtsey or odd word but Percy seems to have forgotten how to sit properly and likes to drape and contort herself when offered a seat.

Personality

Someone forgot to tell Percy about the whole dark and gloomy vampire aesthetic. As bold, odd and in your face as her fashion style is her personality, Percy's quirky, mischievous and immature. She's a six year old stuck in the body of an nineteen year old for the last few hundred years both in terms of immaturity and morality- by which I mean her morals are clouded by how bored she is (and with a life this long, boredom is your worst enemy) and the end goal.

Persephone's the bane of the ministry of magic, as sarcastic, sassy and uncooperative as she is unpredictable and unreliable, she constantly leaves them wondering whose side she's on. The answer to that is of course her own, she follows her own rules and does her own thing. Sometimes, if Percy's in the mood, she'll do the ministry a favour, but other times she'll do the opposite. Not exactly comforting when Percy's one of the oldest vampires to date but when you consider some of the others... well at least she's willing to help occasionally.

The only thing predictable about Percy is the trail of chaos that follows her everywhere. She's a massive fan of pranks and general trouble making, if your house has been overrun by ostriches then you'd better believe Persephone had a part in it. Centuries of almost immortality has made Percy incredibly reckless and she's prone to making dumb decisions.

She's not actually dumb though, in fact Persephone is very perceptive and a quick thinker. A long life has made her wiser than you'd think and if you're lucky you might be on the receiving end of Percy's rare bits of wisdom. She's got a lot of hidden talents from being able to fly a plane(courtesy of World War 2) to speaking fluent German to being able to horseride. When you've lived(haha) this long, you've gotta find something to do.

For all of Persephone's fooling around, you'd almost forget that she's actually quite powerful and has killed thousands. Still, within the last hundred years or so her crimes have decreased significantly to petty theft and the occasional murder when she's really hungry. Of course she hasn't been caught for any of these, though people suspect. She doesn't get attached to people easily, they all die anyway.

History

1532-1551

Born to a muggleborn witch and a halfblood wizard, Persephone was the youngest of seven children. She grew up in the English countryside, Kent to be specific, and never had a second to herself, always surrounded by her siblings. Percy's memories of her childhood are mostly positive, though tainted slightly by what would happen next. She can't remember much, it was a while back

1542 came and Persephone was off to Hogwarts. Although much more well behaved than she is now, she spent a good deal of time in detention. Percy talked back just that little bit too much, wasn't quite as ladylike as people wanted her to be.

Next came graduation and the arrival of Tedros Marino, an Italian lord passing through the village Percy grew up in. Persephone caught his eye and they hit it off immediately, bonding over a similar disdain of the stuffy and formal and a love for adventure. Percy's family was delighted by this. Not so much when Tedros turned Persephone into a vampire. Disgusted, they chased both of them out of the village with stakes and fire.

1551-1725

Persephone was devastated and turned away from Tedros, of course never having wanted to become a vampire. But Tedros soon won her over and together they travelled the world, bouncing from place to place before people could get too suspicious of the deaths that came with them, their nocturnal activities and how they never seemed to age.

Over the years Tedros taught Persephone what it was like as a vampire, teaching her how to use her new abilities and deal with her new weaknesses. Tedros had already been undead for around a century and so he knew what he was doing, knew where to go and when to leave. They had good fun together, Tedros's own trouble making tendencies rubbing off on Percy and in 1596 they married.

Things were looking good. But nothing last forever, not even in the world of the basically immortal vampires. Over time the pair grew lax, until one night in July (1725) they overstayed their welcome and underestimated the villagers. In the chase, Tedros was staked through the heart, leaving Percy to flee, alone int he world.

1725-1863

Word of Tedros's death got around in the vampire community and an invitation from a vampire coven in America was offered to Persephone. So to America she went, and for the first decade things were okay. Still in mourning for the death of Tedros, Percy was a lot more subdued, but as soon as she started to recover, things worsened. The coven hadn't expected the chaos that was Percy and so after she played one prank too many they kicked her out.

Persephone wasn't too bothered. They'd bored her anyway. She missed having someone to make trouble with her and so she went on a little tour of Europe, hoping to find someone like Tedros to turn. During her travels Percy met a great many interesting people, but nobody was quite like Tedros and the longer she searched, the worse she felt. And so Percy turned to something else, she looked for a family. She turned a few people she got along with and for a while that worked. But Persephone soon realised that she lacked the responsibility that Tedros had had and after the final one had died she gave up.

Who needs family anyway? Persephone contented herself with adventures and the occasional fling.

1863-Present

It was in 1863 that Persephone found herself back where she'd started, at the house she'd grown up in. She'd been passing through on her way to the English court when she met Mary, her great great great something grandniece. Previously Percy had avoided the wizarding world, they knew vampires existed for sure and so were a lot harder to fool. But here was a witch who saw her and instead of reaching for her wand, held out her hand.

Mary recognised Persephone immediately, the two looked practically identical. She took Percy in and the two became the best of friends. Even Mary's husband was more accepting, though he'd taken a bit more persuasion. It was Mary that convinced Persephone to rejoin the wizarding world, register herself and to drink animal blood more regularly than human blood, though Percy still found herself making the occasional mistake. When Mary died in 1904, Persephone decided to keep this animal blood drinking up in memory of a true friend.

She joined the suffragettes to fight for women's votes, fought as much as she could in World War 2(though that was mainly just cos she missed human blood and they were all dying anyway).

Persephone briefly considered getting a job but even if she wanted to, she'd have a tough time getting one. Luckily she's got some money left over from Tedros's noble background and is a good thief. Nowadays she doesn't have to move around as much, what with her no longer having to hide her vampireness. She's just recently moved to London, partially from frequent suggestions from the Ministry (they want to keep an eye on her) and partially because she's always had a soft spot for London, it being where her and Tedros got married.
