“I agree, she’s got us both. But we can’t be going to Level 2 and bleating about it without a bargain to be made. For one, she’d have us, two, they’d have us, and three, every time I’ve done it, it’s backfired. We’ll have to do it without them.” Johann gazed grimly up at the blackboard a moment, “ we could turn her own against her. Ruin her plans from the inside.” He deflated, swallowing “though I threatened that…”Johann Storm
It was as though Balfour was arming him, preparing him for battle.Adon Eleor
No time for that. This wasn't an accident, someone or something had brought her here. Raine turned around, going straight for the table, overwhelmed by the sheer number of items there but more certain than ever that the black laurel wand belonged to Zel. Should she take it all? Leave it all?Raine Almasy

"Leave them with Professor Storm." He was a former Auror. Presumably trustworthy. And if he wasn't, the analysts on Level Two, once they had them, could date the spells and any tampering through a priori and other means. "We'll need them for the warrant, but I'll need to pave the way on Level Two for that, first." Like informing Carstairs that he even had a suspect.Adon Eleor
“Good…” he said, sluggishly, venturing a timid smile. That felt right. Dree and Akiva and their son Gabe. He looked back to the man standing just beyond his mother. “And… who’s Adon?”Adon Eleor

A pause. The wizard lowered his hands and shook his head grimly. "Let's say I believe you. I can't do anything except for put a watch on Ira Almasy, not without substantial evidence." Solomon was going to go with his gut instinct on this. "And I will have her watched because I don't think you're lying entirely. That doesn't mean I can let you go, Hannah. And it doesn't mean you won't be punished for crimes you have committed."Solomon Carstairs
She opened her eyes to look fondly at Layton. "Soon," Ira assured him and allowed him to lean in to kiss her. Their lips barely grazed but it held all the emotion of true fervour. "Will you dress me?" she pressed her forehead to his mouth.
He sent a thought into her head: yes, of course, anything. Her brother's funeral had been a quiet affair but now they would have to attend the reading of his last will and testament. Ira had fed Mihai Zamperia his kin, and he had taken Kazimir's life in retaliation. She was tired of this battle.

“Did ye fucking well think I was the mole because that can be the only bloody reason ye kept me in the dark about this. Ye knew! Bombay refused to speak to anyone but she told you and ye bloody let me get on with those interviews not having a bloody clue! How the bloody hell do I do my job when I have half the bloody facts?” His voice grew louder, angrier as he finally got it out. “Unless you enjoy seein’ yer ‘ead auror looking bloody incompetent in front of a dangerous criminal? Is this a bloody joke to you, Carstairs?”Ed Pratt

"Ira asked me to write her last will and testament," and again that brilliant blue gaze shifted from contract to Balfour's face. Its scrutiny was dead serious.
Which only made Balfour self-conscious as he turned this fact over in his mind, brow creasing. Hm. Not once in his acquaintanceship with Ira had she ever discussed her mortality so prosaically. Poetically and literarily, maybe, but the material world had always been more of a means to an end - dramatic style to her violent substance. "I’m sorry…" Johann's apology intruded on this thought and Balfour realised he had been staring at the damned parchment too.
His gaze snapped abruptly to the other man and he reached out to take him by the sides of his face, mirroring his seriousness.
"Johann. Darling," he brushed his thumb over a sharp cheekbone, "... what are you telling me? Is it what I think it is?"Balfour Spectre
" "But that isn't relevant today. You see, Raine... Reinka -" he met her in the eye now, "- there's a very good chance you might never see her again. She's asked me to implore for you to write to her, as soon as possible. It might be a matter of days."
The tension drew taut, a worried furrow now. Layton blinked - slipped for a moment into her mind, where he confirmed that she had previously been skeptical of Ira's illness. Had expected this to be something different; a threat, perhaps, veiled in the form of an unassuming visit.
It was obvious she hadn't understood how involved he was in her aunt's work. "Jebediah Layton

“It became apparent to us from first indication of Almasy’s true nature that we were dealing with a complex and extensive history of criminal activity” he explained. “Thus far we have discovered her explicit involvement in numerous infractions. Kidnapping, extortion, the death of Wolfgang Storm, the running of underground Werewolf rings, and the destruction of the Leaky Cauldron on Guy Fawkes night.”Temperance Cartwright
"She knew we were coming," he glanced at Nadine, "It's the only explanation we have for now. Building residents had continued to enter and leave Atreus in perfect safety, including the recon Aurors who visited in the day."Solomon Carstairs
"Personal treatment from the Head of Department. You found out I was telling the truth."
Solomon leaned back into his chair, nodding. He couldn't blame Hannah for being bitter - the more he understood from the remains of Almasy's Atreus office, the easier it was to understand how easily one could become ensnared in that woman's mesh of magic and finely put words. His behaviour to the werewolf had been regrettably patronising.
"We did, from more than one source."Solomon Carstairs

“We were naturally reluctant to make public the nature of these deaths,” informed Solomon Carstairs when asked why this information had not been made available sooner, ”And it was prudent to give the families a mourning period.”Temperance Cartwright
