While visiting Francis on Level 9 just before going home to sleep, Johann decides it is a good idea to try the hospital sleeping potion: Soporime. He falls asleep on the spot. Francis panics and summons Colin as he believes Johann has dropped dead. Colin lets his friend sleep it off, but plays a joke on Johann, suggesting he was about to dissect him for research.

Over drinks at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, Ignan mentions that the family are aware of Johann's tendency to use sleeping potion. Johann does not appreciate the interest. Ignan also gleans Vedir Prideaux's dealings.

Accidentally, Johann invites both Colin and Hannah out for drinks at the Leaky Cauldron. The two dislike each other but are both close friends with Johann. They make a bet with Johann that he can't stop using potion and confiscate what he has on him and back at Gabrielle's. As they do Hannah spots the stolen potion. He loses the bet, naturally.

Through a sleep-deprived mishap, Johann takes too much sleeping potion at work and collapses. Office nemisis, Hamilton is his good samaritan though leaves him in the St Mungo's reception and flees. After being brought round, Johann confesses out of desperation and Joy and Arcturus admit him for a week's stay.

Father and son bicker, Wolfgang voices his disdain at Johann's supposed relationship with Hannah Bombay since she is a werewolf, amongst other recent events. Johann's parents are unaware of his proposal on Christmas Day.

A month and a half since being discharged, Johann begrudgingly attends an appointment with Arcturus to follow up on his progress. He is evasive, and Arc's examination of Johann's blood reveals he is back on sleeping potion. The Healer confronts his patient, who confesses. Arcturus poses a different form of more regular support rather than report him.

Angry, upset, having abandoned his family again, Johann eventually reappears at Balfour's flat, exhausted, and uses potion to catch a little sleep.

Sleep could not be elusive forever. The last of the bottle of potion captured it soon enough, and his blue eyes closed at last. Waking from potion was never much fun. If felt like swimming up to the surface from a great depth, limbs heavy, vision blurred. It took a while to remember where he was, and there was always the panic that he might not come around for more than a day.Johann Storm

The Ministry enforce an appointment with St Mungo's as Johann has cited ill health in his resignation. Expecting to see Cecily Antonopoulos, Johann is alarmed to be reassigned back to Arcturus Hollingbury now the healer has returned from Malaysia. He has been keeping his distance on purpose at the request of Elixa Mordent. After some discussion, Arcturus proposes a sleeping log and explains his further research. Johann resolves to talk to his mother.

If I took the time to pull myself together I could be years, and I can't afford financially to do it, the Ministry certainly wouldn't wait and I don't think I'll survive the years either. ... As promised to Arcturus ten days before, Johann visits his mother who teaches Arithmancy at Hogwarts. It takes a few false starts but eventually he confesses, and she insists on accompanying him the next time he meets Arcturus.

As a result of Poisons and Painkillers, Johann falls ill from Syrup of Hellebore, and Balfour rushes him to hospital. Arcturus receives them. Between blue glowing vomit, the possibility of death, a sleeping log and a growing patient death-count, none of them are having a particularly good night.

Balfour wasn't certain if Arc would be able to confirm it, considering confidentialities, but he didn't need a verbal response - only to say it out loud himself. "Don't answer that. Never mind." He breathed out slowly. "What is it that you need me to do right now? And what's the matter with him? Is it poison? Glowing vomit isn't... he said it wasn't normal, even for what he takes." He has missed an appointment with Arcturus, and the sleeping log has returned to the healer because he had no choice but to leave it behind in London. In a manipulative panic, Johann calls on Arcturus for strong sleeping solution and calming draught.
