Rigel Acrux

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Physical Description

He’s 5’4, tanned skin. Brown eyes and brown semi curly hair. Being short and stocky never really presented an advantage, especially in school. He is an agreeable teen like the fact that he doesn’t present a threat to any, yet no one can read what he is capable of.

His confidence speaks volumes in his gait. Being sure of oneself is an advantage that Rigel is not afraid to flaunt. Typically on first encounter Rigel is charming and likeable, developing these traits through many failed social interactions during his 5th and 6th year.

His glasses add a sign of sophistication on him that he wears well. He is rarely seen without them and often feels naked with them off, even though they are just reading glasses. He likes to wear skinny jeans with rips in them. Adopting the skater look that is more popular in the United States. Often an outcast with his clothes but that is part of the charm in his appearance. Able to spot him easily and from anywhere. Akin to this he has a nose ring, which is unusual for a boy to have.

The way in which he talks is carefree yet he chooses his word to get a specific meaning across. He subscribes to the notion that interpretation is determined by the speaker, under this notion he chooses his phrasing and diction to match. His accent is soft, almost mitigated however to an acute listener there is an italian accent following in the wake of the more dominant irish one he’s learned from his mother. Along with how he chooses his words he chooses his voice to match. Rarely does he keep his voice raised but he does respond emotionally sometimes, failing to stay in check, however after his emotional response dies he resumes his slow and meticulous speech.

His body language almost always presents itself as comfort, and lackadaisical. He used to fidget but now understanding that it draws unwanted attention he’s adopted a more subtle tick. He takes his thumb, starting at the pointer finger, taps its way down to the pinky. Counting to four, then following backwards from the pinky starting from four. Whenever he is anxious one could see him doing this exercise. Rigel understanding the vanity of the world that he lives in spends time on his appearance in order to make it look naturally messy and carefree. Ironically he makes note of this dichotomy and sometimes smiles at himself in the mirror when getting ready for the day and affixing his hair so it looks messy in a specifically attractive way. Nothing that you see Rigel wearing or doing is without design and the presupposition that someone is watching him and taking note.

Personality Description

Ambiverted, like extroverted when he wants to be and likes to be alone sometimes. His mood is pretty stable, not really the aggressive type. Likes to think before confrontation unless it involves people he likes. He doesn’t hesitate to protect family or friends. Stays calm under normal stressful situations. Probably excels at them really, takes charge if need be.

He procrastinates habitually. He’s not really the best student, teachers are disappointed in him because they see his aptitude and see him wasting it. Some teachers don’t like him - class clown type. Responds to authority ONLY if he respects them. That’s hard to gain sometimes. He got in a lot of trouble freshman year but that staved off as soon as he learned it wasn’t worth the laughs anymore.

He’s stubborn in his ways but not too closed minded. You could reason with him in a good argument, typically using his words against himself. He’s straight, isn’t really focused on girl friends but he doesn’t shy away from them.

He has a shaky sense of self, he doesn’t know what his future holds. He’s afraid of it in fact, thinks he’s a failure. He likes honest people, loyal. Ones who tell him the hard truth about himself even though it might upset him. Someone to hold him accountable. People who speak their emotions when asked and don’t lie about them. No fake facade to maintain. He loves to read, and golf.

History

Grew up in Italy until his father found a better job in Ireland, which also was a plus since his mothers family was there and he had never met them. He moved when he was about 8.

He got along with his family, his older sister really dictated the rules of the house so by social observation he saw his sisters mistakes and decided the risk wasn't worth the reward or the punishment. Him and his sister never really got along until his fifth year where the sister grew more mature and less prone to emotional outbursts (which were often prompted by Rigel.) His father, Cosmo, His mother, Nova, and his sister Capella.

Cosmo always knew something was strange about Rigel’s innate ability for athleticism and reading people - something more intangible than luck but not quite often enough in the human experience to warrant a naming of the sensation. Rigel at a young age had amazing reflexes, however when he caught a glass without looking, or even noticing it with body language it was peculiar. Cosmo often thought about this at night with Nova, and Nova found so much enjoyment in his prevarication of this intangible that it became a running gag between the two. Cosmo, after this peculiarities would happen would often look at Nova first, she returning the glance with that offhanded look that says - “there was nothing more than luck in that, quit it.” So finally as one could imagine the paroxysm of hope a father feels after being proved right six years later when reading a letter from Hogwarts declaring their child’s proclivity to magic. His father, proud because he has already experienced the stages of denial and absurdity and shock when he relented that his son must have something else going on. Where as the mother was in utter disbelief. This was no time for Cosmo to bathe in “I told you so” but to rather help her understand the abstract nature we have come to love. Upon endless conversations where this time Nova was at the head of the ship, she finally docked at the realization that this was an amazing opportunity for her son and that she is proud he can experience such a rich and secret culture.

His first years at Hogwarts formed most of his character and personality. He had a rough go at things in the beginning. Unsure of his style and voice he was lost in the sea of fake confidence that his peers had around him. He had few close friends. However he compensated this by establishing his jocular manner in the classroom earning him the title of class clown. He was not well liked amongst the teachers and often caused problems for them despite their best interests. He felt lonely, and empty. Being away from home caused him to be even unsure of his surroundings. He fell into a pit of despair that he pulled himself out of in his fifth year. Here is where he had some semblance of style. He found his voice along with a group of friends that he consistently hung out with. Nothing big marked any of his years at Hogwarts. Sixth year he developed more socially and became more self aware. Started the path of understanding himself and others and why they do the things they do. Started to catch on some of the subtleties that are often looked over by his peers. Or that is just what he perceives. He is uncertain of his future, scared of not living up his rising ambition and self worth. He thinks he wants to be a Lawyer for (Ministry of magic??)
