Russia, also officially known as the Russian Federation, is a country in northern Eurasia. It is a federal semi-presidential republic. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area.

Extending across the entirety of northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans nine time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait.

Russia's 160 ethnic groups speak some 100 languages. According to the 2002 Census, 142.6 million people speak Russian, followed by Tatar with 5.3 million and Ukrainian with 1.8 million speakers. Melanthe Grumman's father targeted by the Russian Ministry (perhaps condoned by the Ministries of other countries as well) and a group of pro muggle/halfblood activists for being, for the most part, the money bags for various dark arts operations. He provided money to Voldemort, Death Eaters and their projects to eliminate muggles or muggle supporters. These pro muggle/halfblood activists wanted to get rid of extreme purists and/or Dark Artists aligned with Voldemorte, the Death Eaters and their supporters.

It was their hope that they might cut off the Dark Lord's resources and Orfeo Grumman was seen as a threat primarily in the financial standpoint. But little did they know that they also managed to stop--albeit temporarily--the flow of illegal runespoor goods and supplies.
