Zack Zhang

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Zack is a shy, awkward Muggle-born wizard who enjoys magic and learning in general. He can play the piano, but generally doesn't unless his mother is nagging him to. He would like, at the very least, some friends other than the book in the library, as once one gets to know him he can be quite sweet and friendly.

Physical Description

Zack is 5'10" or thereabouts, with black hair and gray eyes. He wears glasses which really need a tightening, as they keep slipping down his nose. He could also do with a new prescription; thus, he squints often during class. His hair is short and perpetually messy; it's not clear whether this is due to its nature or whether he just doesn't brush it enough. He often slouches.

Personality Description

Zack is kind of shy. He has trouble talking to people at first, and often seems reserved and unemotional at first; this side of him is often what people expect at first. Luckily, they're usually pleasantly surprised: Zack is awkward, sure, but a very good guy. He's very sweet to people he cares about, and very responsible. He doesn't let people copy off his work, for obvious reasons, but he'll always help with homework and studying if he has time and someone asks.

He is a planner--he has a whole agenda book full of notes to himself and annotated schedules. He's a bit sarcastic, and brilliant. He enjoys classes for the most part, but thinks teachers should at least try to make subjects entertaining--he believes it's theoretically possible for all of them. He's excitable when he's in the right mood (read: very very awake) and really likes something. He can go on for ages about something he learned in classes, and will sometimes not realize until very late in the rave about some obscure subject that he's completely boring the person he's talking to.

He smiles a lot, and is usually pretty friendly, except when he's overtired. The only time he is openly hostile is when someone wakes him up too early, or in the middle of the night, or keeps him up too late; Zack needs his sleep very much and has a very hard time staying awake when he's tired. He tends to carry around a large amount of coffee or tea to combat this.

Despite his tendency to fall asleep in class sometimes (he tries to sit in the back for this reason) Zack is very smart and enjoys learning and reading in general. If an assignment is interesting, he attacks it with fervor as soon as he gets out of class, and very often turns in stellar papers. If the assignment bores him, unfortunately, his procrastinator side kicks in, but luckily his intelligence and ability to find information on short notice helps his last-minute work somewhat.

History

Zack never thought he would be a wizard. He'd read about them, of course, in various books, and seen wizards on TV and in movies. But they weren't real. When he was eleven years old, around the time after he'd gotten out of school for the summer, a very nice man in a rather odd outfit showed up at the door while he was reading on the couch.

The very nice man asked Zack to get his parents.

Zack obliged, and his parents were soon informed about why odd things had been happening around the house lately, namely that wizards did indeed exist and their mild-mannered piano-playing son was one. Excitedly he bought his first-year books and rushed off to Hogwarts when the time came. Along with him came his cat, Annie, who had been mistakenly given a female name when the family picked him up as a stray. The cat had always been more Zack's than anyone's, as he actually stuck to the common childhood exclamation often said upon getting an opportunity to have a pet--"I'll feed her, I'll change her litterbox, I'll take care of her," and so on. Besides, Annie was a bit of an annoyance to his mother. His first year at Hogwarts was spent packing knowledge into his head and learning about this whole magic thing he'd never before known even existed. The first break he went back was the only one he really wanted to go back; home was filled mostly with having to lie to his old friends from school before and practicing piano. Lots of practicing piano. He couldn't wait to go back, basically. Magic slowly became more and more a part of his life, until he was only remembering he couldn't use it at home seconds before he said a spell--luckily he managed to catch himself every time, or he might have had some trouble with the Ministry.

Zack didn't make many friends his first year, and was mostly known as 'that guy who fell asleep in the back of History of Magic that one time" or "that guy who always carries around that enormous mug of tea." This trend continued for much of his school career. Zack made friends slowly and very conservatively--he's never talked much and has trouble initiating conversations. People didn't really approach him for much, either. "Hey, would you mind letting me copy your homework" or "Wake up, class has let out" are pretty much the only things people say to him. He's content with this, mostly, but would like to make more friends before he graduates. He's also worried about what he wants to do after graduation--he's still not sure yet, and that rather worries him. He's always made top marks, so he could do pretty much anything he wanted--it's the trouble of deciding what that 'anything' is that's eating at him. At this point he thinks he may have to take a year off just to think about it.
