Obderedria Pienas didn't have too many friends before she came to Hogwarts, so she would play pretend and write letters to her fictional pen pal, Beverly. But in the magical world all is not as it seems. When Obderedria has her brain scrambled as the victim of a brutal crime, what is real and was is not blurs across the line. Do her magical abilities give a 'form' to this Beverly? Or is her imaginary friend something else, a key to a life long forgotten?
NOTICE: Several early site references to Beverly were alluded to or retconned after the fact. The first written post of the character was in "Wabbit Season" Sept 20 2009. This plot sees the relationship of Obderedria and Beverly in the Student Era (thru August 2015).
It's been a very strange St. Patrick's day for Obderedria Pienas, as she writes to her imaginary pen-pal. Not only was she teased mercilessly for dying her hair green, the bad haircut kept her with the moniker "moldy marshmallow" for the rest of the week. Then all her hair grew back all over her room, permanently growing in a pattern of brown with green polka dots. Her mother Patricia Pienas admits her father was a wizard and this must be Drea's magic coming out.
On the fringes of some memorable events for the Sorting of the Class of 2015 (Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat, Opening Feast and Sorting Ceremony 2008-2009) two young students are nervous about the pending Sorting. Philo Falkin is from a magical family and doesn't want to wind up in Hufflepuff like his folks. Obderedria Pienas doesn't find being a 'secret witch' to be like anything she imagined, especially being the only one present to have green tinted hair. All the while others speculate about what exactly the stoic and limber Heliotrope LeJean is supposed to be as she dries herself off from swimming the length of the Black Lake. Philo is instantly smitten catching sight of Obderedria but misses his chance to give an introduction, while she is wondering what to write to her friend Beverly about the school and feast. The Sorting Hat consoles Philo and Obderedria, sorting them to Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff respectfully. And likely has the most one-sided conversation its ever had with Heliotrope's sorting to Hufflepuff.
Heliotrope spends a Saturday afternoon picking weeds out of the lake. As she works along the shore, Tynan and Dilly ask her what all the weeds are for. She explains that she uses them for fishing. Not believing her, the other children watch her give a demonstration. Dilly spots a kelpie colt rising from the water. The quick instincts of the raised by merfolk Heliotrope are able to stun the creature. Tynan and Heliotrope work swiftly to tie it down.
Drea contemplates her rather dull summer after her 1st year at Hogwarts. She didn’t go to Egypt and is waiting to see the Tournament opening ceremonies with Pax Wintergreen. In a crossed out section, she wonders how the fictional Beverly could have written her a reply in her Charms final, or if she just imagined it happening.
Gerard and Corey explore the Hogwarts grounds as they anticipate the challenges of the upcoming TetraWizard Tournament. Corey has a gift for the academic advisor who has mentored him through his difficult times at Beauxbatons. Gerard suggest a rare breach of protocol to explore the edge of the Forbidden Forest, as the pair are watched by a creature with shining golden eyes.
Obderedria and her mum need to get her 2nd year things at Diagon Alley. Philo joins his father and older brother who also have business that day. Seeing Drea, they catch up about the summer. The Falkins offer to help Obderedria shop when Patricia gets a call on her phone, afflicted by the magic around The Leaky Cauldron and needing to leave. It's only a short time for Philo & Drea's friendship to deepen. Drea gets a memo from her mum (enchanted by Frederick) about needing to go home as the police were arresting their neighbors.
Obderedria recaps her busy August thus far, reflecting on how some of her school friendships are changing as she matures three months off from her 13th birthday. Including: sampling candy with Pax Wintergreen at the Tournament festivities; housemate Dahlia Collins confiding with her about puberty and her first kiss; and the delayed shopping trip where she met Philo Falkin and shared a dirigible plum with him.
Obderedria's mother, Patricia, is accosted by Alistair Grey for her memories. When Obderedria confronts him she's victim to a rushed obliviation. A passing Auror Trainee rushes in to defend the women.
The rest of August is a blur for Obderedria, confused about the forgotten 2nd trip to Diagon Alley on the 12th after meeting the Falkins on the 10th. After mother and daughter were treated at St. Mungo's, back at home Patricia has forgotten everything about Drea schooling at Hogwarts. The young Hufflepuff is at a loss to jog her memory as she can't perform magic outside of school. Only her dwarf peach tree from Herbology and her Hogwarts acceptance letter convince her mother. Drea reaches pique insecurity about performing magic after the summer during the Welcoming Feast. Salem's Headmaster Ferreole LeBeau taught her a heating spell (Siccari) to help Heliotrope LeJean damp from the lake, but it's super effective.
Beverly only catches flashes of these events, as Drea never completes a pen-pal letter before discarding them.
Obderedria checked out a book about pet care from the Library, inspiring her to make fresh pet food for her cat Puddin' after further research to operate a blender accidentally packed into her luggage. Heliotrope gets her some fish as the two make pet food after class using the spell Inanimatus locomotor.
Following the Wand Weighing ceremony last night, Sandusky and Ollivander catch up. The Head of Hufflepuff has called in a favor to have the wandmaker examine Obderedria's Apple and Hippogriff Talon wand, believing it to be the source of her difficulties with magic. Sandusky has a very special wand in mind to have Drea use as a replacement.
Prof Sandusky instructs the now 2nd years on a more complex version of the Flavor Changing spell (Inflecto Gusto) compared to their 1st year lessons. He convinced the house elves to make the most inhospitable looking pizzas imaginable. As students gather around the 4 pizzas, Obderedria is worried about following her demonstration after Dahlia as she's still adjusting to Lillian Westminster's wand. Instead of changing the flavor, she accidentally brings it to life!
September sees Obderedria attempt two more Letters to Beverly before discarding them, seemingly ending this method of journaling. She's unsure about classes using Lillian Westminster's wand borrowed to her by Leopold Sandusky, especially her continued difficulties in Transfiguration with flavor changing spells. Drea finds sometimes she wakes up wondering if Beverly is real or if magic even exists.
Drea's mention of having 'cream soda and pizza at home' inspires some of Beverly's antics in October...
Obderedria is alone at the boat house enjoying the afternoon, singing one of her favorite songs as featured in a much watched film from childhood, "Space Jam." Head Girl Jazz hears her singing and tries to encourage Drea, who's nervous about singing in public and doubts her own creative talents. The young Hufflepuff hears the bleating of a goat from across the lake.
Beverly emerges from the Forbidden Forest looking for Drea, practicing her goat bleating but unable to turn into the animal. Approaching the castle as a rabbit, she plays around with some 1st & 2nd year students.
There is a Horned Serpent of Hogwarts; Salem's Champion Taryn Dickenson has been secretly raising Nagendra, who has taken to exploring the pipes of the castle as a Basilisk once did over the centuries. Erik Collins and Obderedria, who is sick, stumble across the snake slithering out of a bathroom.
Obderedria is still in the doldrums about trying to 'spread joy' with the wand loaned to her by Prof Leopold Sandusky that belonged to his late wife. She's pulled out her blender again to offer some fruit smoothies to Hufflepuff House. Figaro comes in, bewildered as to what a 'blenda' is and helps her with an ice spell. He challenges her being able to cast Inanimatus locomotor with a borrowed wand. Much as Drea tries her best the spell goes out of control and Fig takes potshots at the blender. Drea freaks out over her 2nd year insecurities coming to a head as Fig tries to figure out how to console her.
Ancient Runes Prof Aileen Reid has rented the back room of The Three Broomsticks for a surprise birthday party for her squib sister, Abigail Reid. Several of her friends at Hogwarts attend to shower her with gifts and play a drinking games after the adult chaperones retire to the main pub. Within the festivities, a rabbit-form púca is on the prowl to steal butterbeer. Beverly gets mistaken for a present, almost caught by a cat, and kisses Xaiver Tawse on the lips as she makes her skedaddle.
Beverly has completed her care package to Obderedria. Some owls drop off ice cold Butterbeers and a steaming hot, loaded specialty pizza to Drea's seat at the Hufflepuff table. A passing Gryffindor stops to take a slice.
Once in a blue moon, potentially near Halloween, for whatever reason a hidden set of the Hogwarts dungeons becomes briefly accessible. Some 1st and 2nd years find themselves trapped in a twisty maze of dank corridors lined with tarnished mirrors. Only their reflections are that of their worst fears because the whole place is infested with Boggarts!
For her terrors, Obderedria has wound up separated from Dahlia Collins and Heliotrope LeJean (who didn't get trapped), plagued by an Inferius version of herself. Her terror ties back to a long blocked memory of her feeling half dead and a wizard casting a spell at a shadowy figure, something from long before she went to Hogwarts...
A very elaborate prank culminates in the infamous Body Swap event. Mysterious powders released during the morning post cause over a third of the Great Hall to swap consciousness; students are in the wrong houses (Juni Zamperia and Obderedria Pienas, Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff), castle staff become students, and even women and men have switched. For some strange reason, Casey's male and female psyches are splintered and can't recall their memories associated with the other identity. Casey (male) swapped with Alvis Norling, Hexy (female) swapped with Heliotrope LeJean, and the actual half-merfolk is shunted into Cap'n Patches, an animated scarecrow belonging to Salem's Champion Mace Steinbeck.
Obderedria and Juni, then 2nd and 4th years in Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, respectively, have switched bodies. Drea now sports Juni's dark hair and freckles while Juni has Drea's green-spotted hair, for a bit of aesthetic irony. Their appetites looked to have followed their respective minds, as the two bond as they talk about their parents over lunch. Drea confides about her mother Patricia's memory problems.
One night in November, Obderedria has stranger dreams than usual. Beverly has figured out how to bypass the 'buffer' between them as she enters Drea's dreams. Taking the form of a cartoonish, almost humanoid rabbit with horse-hair tail, Beverly stages a reunion. Drea recognizes her as her pen pal as Beverly encourages her about her insecurities borrowing a wand and making further friends. Things are dreamily (heh) until a nightmarish manifestation of Drea's unknown fears starts spreading through the dreamscape as a disgusting, rotting landscape. Beverly does her best to guide Drea through her repressed memories, promising to always be close by. Unfortunately, Drea doesn't remember most of these dreams after she wakes...
Obderedria is off to the side on the 3rd Floor. Instead of her potions essay, she's writing a story about Beverly's adventures vs a pizza themed monster. Slytherin bully Silvia Bog-Goyle catches Drea in an unflattering position. Swiping the notebook, she makes fun of Drea's writing and weight. Drea's at a loss to defend herself, not taking action until the passing Mairead surprisingly stands up to Silvia for her sake.
The day has come for Obderedria to get her original wand, as Prof Sandusky escorts her to Ollivanders. The wandmaker explains how he stripped the wand to the core and added a new wood, Larch, as a handle to pair with the Apple of the original wand, extending it by an inch. It's a bittersweet feeling as Drea reflects on finally getting used to Lillian Westminster's wand once she returns it to Sandusky, and her old wand feels slightly different.
Coinciding with the WWN Coverage of the Second Task, the Ministry responds to a puffapod outbreak in a muggle neighborhood of London. Meanwhile, Beverly has been shadowing Drea's mother, Patricia Pienas, in hopes of finding a new way to jog her memories to better reconnect with Obderedria. Patricia's recent stint at trying late night walks makes her one of the muggle victims of the puffapod outbreak, as people get launched into the air with sneezes. Utilizing her moth and rabbit forms, Beverly is appalled that she can't get any of the Ministry responders to recognize Patricia as the muggle mother of a student witch.
The Gwyllion Fae need test subjects for the 'Death By Hair' ritual. Casey is stalking the breakfast tables under his invisibility cloak. On a lark, the spotted-hair Hufflepuff is selected as a victim. The hair animating potion proves to be rather effective given the nature of how Drea's hair pattern came into being when her magic first manifested as a child. As her hair threatens to overtake the Hufflepuff table Juni helps her to the Hospital Hut.
Juni has been beaten and accosted by Obderedria's aggravated hair as she raises a stink to see Healer Nadge, all while Drea is bawling her eyes out. The healer's questionable but effective remedy is to first load chewed gum into Drea's hair to keep it from lashing out.
For most of the remaining winter/spring term, Obderedria requires frequent haircuts. Her hair sometimes twitches in regards to her mood until this trait dissipates by the end of her 2nd Year.
The Champions for the Third Task awaken in the Forbidden Forest with few clues to their intended goal. Instead of working together, the teams of Champions are randomly split up with their opponents to complete objectives over various sections of the Forbidden Forest. In a snow covered clearing, a monstrous Horned Serpent and a spectral nightmarish Púca are fighting, but they were never intended to be obstacles in the first place!
Later, the Daily Prophet comments on numerous complaints about the outcome of various aspects of the Third Task, reported by Niobe Thursby:
"What's a what now? A puca? Those are fictional," further commented Holloway-Wiegh against complaints of an old world shapeshifting demon being present in the wood. "Honestly, now you're just making things up." (Gretchen Holloway-Wiegh, Department of International Magical Cooperation)
Obderedria has been experiencing recurring nightmares all of January. One night after waking with a start, she attempts to write another Letter to Beverly. She takes her hair growing out of control as a sign she's loosing control of her magic, even though Ollivander had repaired her wand. When she isn't remembering the Boggart-filled dungeons, she has a strange dream of being upside down, unable to speak as masked figures menace her. The tear-stained letter is crammed under her mattress.
This is an early sign of Drea's Seer ability, as she has unknowingly experienced the plight of Dione Sayer, another victim of the Gwyllion Fae's Death By Hair ritual. See A Twist and A Turn
Juni shares some chocolates with Obderedria in the courtyard, a gift from her dad Mihai Zamperia. She hasn't minded Drea's company despite all the strange circumstances they wind up in (like body swaps and animated hair). Although Juni grows increasingly concerned about Drea's scatter-brained tendencies, and thinks of asking her father about it who is an Obliviator.
Heliotrope LeJean has very odd sleep patterns owing to growing up underwater. She often squirms around the bed or rather sleeps under her bed at various points of the night. Plus she needs a sleep mask. Tonight is a night like any other for her nightly bed-orbiting migrations, except for her not understanding why her roommate Obderedria is suddenly sleepwalking.
Obderedria is sleepwalking around the lower levels of the castle. She's caught up in a dream about a sunset tinged, waterside city cleaning up after some sort of biohazard, much like one of her barmy Beverly stories. Nagendra is wandering the castle again and keeps a wide berth from the 'fae-corrupted' witch he's encountered at various times.
Beverly was influencing Drea's dreams to sleepwalk towards a physical meeting but this never panned out. After being found out of bed, Drea is prescribed some Dreamless Sleep potions for a time, again distancing her from the púca and temporarily blocking her Seer potential.
