Magical duelling, or wizards' duelling is an art and sport where two wix battle by casting magical spells at each other. The usual goal is to incapacitate, disarm, or knock the other duelist from the platform.

In the global West, duelling most often refers to the Western style of duelling. It is highly formalized with strict rules of etiquette, dress, and allowed spells.

Magical duelists employ offensive and defensive spells, stance, specialized casting methods, and athleticism.

Traditionally, a match is called a 'duel' or sometimes a 'cross'. You'll also hear 'match' or 'bout'.

Basic format

Rules can vary, but here is the basic format.

Two duelists stand some defined distance apart, facing each other. Before the match begins, the competitors bow and then assume a ready stance. At a signal, they begin.

The goal is typically to incapacitate, disarm, or knock the other duelist from the platform.

Some formats included timed rounds, point systems, or 'sudden death'.

Duelists are typically prohibited from touching each other, summoning objects outside of the dueling area, or using any non-magical means of combat. The spell list is usually restricted to prevent maiming and death.

Duels take place on a long narrow raised platform, often intricately decorated. Protective spells cast on the platform provide safety for onlookers.

A judge oversees the match. Some formats include a panel of judges to award points or to adjudicate conflicts or close calls.

Organizations

There are several governing bodies which may differ in rules and standards. They offer certifications and sanction competitions.
