A Guide To Taking Ancient Runes,

Rune Resources

Ancient Runes is an Elective course that students can choose upon reaching their Third Year at Hogwarts. Students learn about the Runic Script, as well as other ancient written languages, symbols, and art from various cultures. Though the class teaches the history of magical runes and includes lots of translations and text, there is also a practical component: how to create or enhance enchantments with runes.

Classroom

The Ancient Runes classroom is located on the second floor, near the Headmaster’s office and Moaning Myrtle’s lavatory. Sometimes Myrtle’s dramatics can be heard from all the way down the hall.

The classroom is a standard size, but feels large and airy [1]. Aileen often has the curtains drawn back to let in the sunlight, and keeps a few low maintenance plants on the windowsill (that might nip at sleepy students’ fingers).

In addition to the lights hanging from the ceiling, Aileen has fastened tiny lamps on the edge of each desk so students can read the text better. At the front of the classroom is Aileen’s desk, kept very neat and minimal, with a bin reserved for turning in papers.

Along one wall rests a tall cabinet with extra books and supplies. Towards the back is an old, magically-enhanced slide projector [2] to show examples of ancient texts and the places they came from.

Class Content

Aileen Reid (Sept 08 - Present)
Aileen aims to be strict but fair, and unruffled by student shenanigans (of which there are many). She is known for having a background in Norse runes and Egyptian heiroglyphs, and for going on several expeditions. Aileen encourages students to do their research and think about Runes outside of the typical textbook translations. While she understands that not every student intends on becoming a Runes scholar, she believes they can still learn something from it, and does not accept excuses for slacking off.

Class Projects

In the Fall of '09, the fourth-years participated in The Scavenger Hunt and presented their findings in November.

In 2010, all of the Runes students will have the opportunity to participate in an extra credit project called The Runes Challenge, created in the spirit of the Tetrawizard Tournament.
