Origin

Obderedria grew up in muggle London, the only child of a single mother. Patricia Pienas was an ex-pat Mexican/American working as a paralegal. Whenever Patricia could, they’d cook with fresh ingredients from a local market, and whenever she was too busy, there were plenty of take out options nearby, domestic and international cuisines. Obderedria’s birthday falls on/adjacent to American Thanksgiving, so she’s always associated a turkey dinner with her birthday. Thus, Drea has never had a kind of food she didn’t like.

It could be said the Pienas ladies looked like they had too much to eat. Drea’s tastes are quite unusual, when you see her have ice cream on sausages or mix soft drinks at the soda fountain. She also has an unusually high tolerance for spicy food.

Having to spend more time alone in their apartment as she grew older, Dream’s other diet was various entertainments in books and television. Roald Dahl, Wallace & Gromit, The Borrowers, The Oz Books, Space Jam, etc. Stuff that expanded her imagination, as it was difficult for her to make friends what with her strange name, chubbiness, horrid purple glasses before she got contacts, and a mother who worried about her too much. Yet Drea was kind, generous, and rarely had a cruel thought towards anybody. If a bit of a pushover that was easy to tease in her primary years. And when bullies or reruns plagued her, Drea could retreat into her private fantasies involving her best friend ever, Beverly, who was super awesome and went on all sorts of adventures Drea thought about in daydreams, short prose and pen pal letters in place of an diary.

Her primary teasing reached its peak one fateful St. Patrick’s day. Against her mother’s wishes, Drea decided to dye her hair green with some spray paint before she went to school. She was curious what her life would be like had she grown up with green hair. Given it involved extra teasing and being banned from the cafeteria as a health risk, it was not at all what Drea had hoped. Worse, when her mother caught sight of her that evening, she tried to wash out the paint but some splotches remained. Patricia was forced to cut most of it off, still with flecks of green in some places. The following day was horrible on account of the bad haircut, as Drea was called “a moldy marshmallow.”

Dreading the rest of the school week, Obderedria awoke the next day to discover that her hair had grown back. It filled her whole bedroom and now permanently grew in a pattern of brown with green polka dots. Her mother was just as shocked but saw this as a sign Drea was really a witch. She couldn’t remember who Drea’s father was (they had never married) but she knew he was a wizard.

Obderedria has outgrown many of her school insecurities as a more confident, capable witch. She works as a freelance cartoonist in both muggle and wix media based out of London. She also works part-time at Sugarplum's Sweets Shop in Diagon Alley, morning shifts where she assists in creating new confections. She's close with her mum Patricia, who still lives at their original East Croydon flat, although she's concerned about her health. Some of her illustrations hold clues to her faulty memories and her unrecognized Seer ability, where her visions of the future often come across as hallucinations.

1st to 3rd Year

Drea and her mother didn't have the most straightforward introduction into magical Britain. Patricia was easily unnerved by owls delivering the post and trying to recognize signs of magic as they went about to get her school materials. A student account was set up for her at Gringotts, pounds transferred to galleons, and needing to get most things used on account of their budget. Notably, Drea was paired with her apple and hippogriff talon wand from a cart merchant instead of going to Ollivanders. By chance she happened to meet Ambrosius Flume, of Honeydukes, and set so many letters excited about visiting during her school years the Flumes offered to deliver her candy orders by post.

Having Roald Dahl and the Wizard of Oz for her initial understanding of wixes, along with her own imgainings, going to Hogwarts was nothing like what Drea anticipated yet also nothing like what she could have dreamt up. Taking to being a 'secret witch' she was happy to be sorted in the cozy Hufflepuff dorm. She did well with most of her practical subjects, like Herbology and Potions, and did her best in History to learn about actual magic. Her confidence wavered at times in various spell classes, particularly in DADA. However, when properly motivated Drea often learned certain spells quickly or had cosmetic twists to her magic. Her Lumos spell glows orange, for instance, because its her favorite color.

The Hogwarts feasts were fantastic! Although several older students talked about how to visit the kitchens, and her roommate Dahlia Collins' older sister Ayla would often bake with the house elves, Drea considered it rude to bother them. Her own snacking on an typical day pulled from her Honeydukes stash with an average of 1.5 Sugar Quills per day, so she had something sweet to lick when she took notes. Besides the obvious differences involving magic, Hogwarts was a school like any other with its good and ills, scary teachers and bullies so Drea felt she didn't quite fit in sometimes given her insecurities. When you were the de facto 'den mother' for the weird half-mermaid Heliotrope LeJean, your social life at Hogwarts didn't start off on the right foot.

By the time of spring term when the students were worried about upcoming finals, Drea had settled into a routine. She would always offer to share a sweet to friends or arguing classmates and she would regularly visit the Owlry for post. All this time she wrote plenty of letters to her fictional pen pal, Beverly, but found it embarrassing to admit she had an 'imaginary' friend. Running into Pax Wintergreen at the Owlry, their mail gets mixed up and he offers to help get her post resorted. Drea's recent letter to Beverly is sent by an owl before Drea admits it doesn't have anyplace to actually go. But the encounter does earn her another friend.

And a whole lot of confusion come her 1st year Charms final. In the middle of her exam she has to reveal a secret message, and hers is an actual reply from Beverly?! Her performance tanks after accidentally destroying the message. Her best exam is Herbology, where Prof Ishane Blair has them re-potting magical flowers around dwarf fruit trees. Drea is part of the 1st year class to take the trees home, including Heliotrope, Pax and Cytherea Connor, which makes for a miniature orchard on the Hogwarts Express as they look forward to the summer. Drea accutally keeps hers growing in its pot, making it her 'second' pet at Hogwarts.

Her first summer home was quiet, starting to get lonely again but now Obderedria could convince her mother to let her go to Diagon Alley on certain days of the week. Drea only used her wand to get past the brick wall, and would meet various current and future students at the shops. Drea and Dahlia bond when she visits the Collins apartment, as both girls are worried about being "early bloomers" in the chest department. Dahlia also confesses kissing a Gryffindor in their year Keegan Kearney. During the opening ceremonies of the TetraWizard Tournament, she finally gets a chance to go to Honeydukes in person as she and Pax sample various international candies. Before her intended back to school shopping is interrupted, Obderedria runs into Philo Falkin and some of his family in the Leaky Cauldron. The two catch up on their summers and Drea's Grommit backpack is quite the conversation starter. Oblivious to his crush and unsure why he doesn't like fruit, she shares a dirigible plum with him before her mother calls her away, establishing their friendship.

Saddly the good times don't last. During the second attempt at school shopping, Obderedria and her mother were accosted by a criminal desperate to harvest memories. Obderedria suffered a botched Obliviation at the hands of Alistair Grey. An auror trainee was one the scene as mother and daughter are whisked to St. Mungo's. Overall, there's little in the way of followup to these new memory loses. Not only is Drea's mind in a tender state, for a time Patricia completely forgets that Drea has had one year of schooling at Hogwarts. She's distraught finding ways to convince her mother she's a witch and for months never completes a full letter to Beverly.

During her 2nd year, Drea has vague amnesia-like symptoms in regards to the end of the summer. What's more noticeable is that her stream of consciousness is decidedly more unfiltered, as she has difficulty separating whatever is happening in the present with her overactive imagination. Overblown spell castings on Heliotrope (whether due to Drea's shaky confidence or Helio's uniqueness) doesn't help either. In talking with her Head of House Leopold Sandusky about her insecurities, he mistakes this for issues from her low quality wand. He lines up a meeting with Ollivander after the Wand Weighing ceremony for the first team of Champions, offering to lead Drea his late wife's wand while her apple and hippogriff talon wand is refurbished.

Drea's been making cat food and smoothies with an old blender accidentally packed in her trunk, having found a spell to animate it without electricity. Figaro Sellaphix challenges her supposed skill and doesn't help matters when it goes overboard. He probably stepped into more than her bargained for as Drea freaks out upon all her insecurities coming to a point (and the atrocious rate of exchange from muggle to wizard money when he offers to pay her back) but he does his best to console her.

Drea is one of the young students lost to the "Terror Dungeons" a strange section of Hogwarts filled with grimy mirrored walls and boggarts. Her own worst fear is a zombified version of herself, tied to a repressed memory where she had been really sick when she was young jarred loose from the obliviation. Eventually Beverly is able to reconnect with Drea through her dreams, helping her face her nightmares, although as usual Drea barely remembers them and still considers her friend to be imaginary. One of her longer Beverly stories gets snatched up by Slytherin Silvia Bog-Goyle and oddly it's Gryffindor Mairead ó Fearghail to Drea's rescue.

During the infamous Body Swap day Drea winds up in the body of then 4th year Juni Zamperia, herself also a plump student. Besides trading freckles and hair spots the two eventually develop a friendship, if further plagued by other magic issues Drea faces. Juni suspects Drea has memory issues given her father works as an Obliviator. Otherwise school life quiets for Drea (outside of seeing Nagendra slither out of a bathroom once) as she works up the nerve to attend various clubs. As the Yule Ball approaches Profs Aileen Reid and Nightingale Kesali teach the younger years dancing and to Drea's astonishment she gets partnered up with Keegan for practice.

Towards the latter half of her 2nd year, Drea starts exhibiting sleepwalking as she's found wandering the castle, tied to her shared dreams with Beverly. She's prescribed dreamless sleep potions, which curbs this tendency at the time.

By the start of her 3rd year, it's too charitable to still call Drea "chubby"; all the good food at Hogwarts and around home, and a rather inactive summer cause her to grow out before she grows up, as she always dreads getting her uniforms altered for school. Her confidence is growing for her singing and artistic talents, and she does surprisingly well with Divination and Creatures for her electives. She has a dream journal filled with sketches to document her dreams shared with Beverly. Plus, there's this strange black rabbit she dubs "Lil' Bev" that she sees outside the castle during field work for Creatures. Cracks about her weight are becoming more common, and the teasing worsens for a time when her contacts get flushed down a toilet and she has to go back to wearing glasses.

In her 3rd year, she also learns about magically grafting other flowering trees to her dwarf peach tree. By the end of the experiment it grows apricots and oranges along with the original peaches. During Ligeia Canterbury's tenure of the Hogwarts Players, a strange 'infinite stage' (actually the Room of Requirement) with multiple curtains and backdrops is used. Drea's sleepwalking makes a return as Beverly tries to draw her into the furthest recesses of the room, an area of ambiguous magic that would help them meet. Again, the attempted reunion falls flat.

February 2011 is a hard month for Obderedria. By this time she has a friendly, not quite sisterly, relationship with Juni Zamperia, who is one of the students abducted from Honeydukes during the events of Mischief Unmanaged. Plus, Heliotrope was also caught up in the bloodied Black Lake and spends time in hospital. Drea is wracked by sympathy and guilt during the days the students were missing, and her opinion of Beverly is at an all-time low. Drea had dreams warning her away from Honeydukes, and there was also that nightmarish horse that chased her from the path to the village. She's silent in most of her classes and isn't seen eating, too worried about other people. When she does cave into her hunger during this time, she binges on whatever she can find.

She eventually stabilizes again, although she's finding many of her school relationships are getting redefined.

4th to 7th Year

Drea's weight continues to fluctuate throughout her remaining years at Hogwarts. She's at her heaviest sometime in her 5th or 6th year, quite obese, yet eventually loses enough weight to remain plump and plus sized as an adult. She tried her hand as a backup Hufflepuff Keeper for a bit of exercise but didn't take to it after one game.

Her relationships with her closest friends are soured when she and Philo both pitch in to help Heliotrope catch up academically during their 4th and 5th year. Increased time staying 'dry' (as in greatly reduced lake swims) causes Helio to develop a strange eye disorder based on her innate vision adjustments to deal with light refraction underwater. The half-Mer is given "glasses" that actually have rippling water instead of lenses. Drea tries to encourage her but this backfires, as Drea becomes increasingly fed up within having to play 'den mother.' Plus, when Philo eventually lets slip the reasons why he's been attracted to her all these years, she's not in a position to consider herself "being fat but also attractive" given all the stress with tutoring Helio let alone her own exams and insecurities about her health.

During one journey home, the strange black rabbit “Lil’ Bev” forces the issue by following Drea home with her things, basically the pet adopting the owner. Given “Lil’ Bev” settled on a size equivalent to a Flemish Giant, she’s a tad more obvious as a rabbit. With the comfort of a new pet, whenever Drea is forlorn about her school subjects, its the school clubs that build up her confidence. Given her extensive dream sketches for Divination, she refines her style in Art Club, learning about animating her drawings and submits cartoons to the Hogwarts Howler. Occasional background roles in the Hogwarts Players help her become much more assertive, impressing a few with her singing talent.

Yet as a Hufflepuff Drea is always there for her friends. She's still heartsick that Heliotrope never got an "Outstanding" in her O.W.L.s and failed half her courses, meaning she's unlikely to return 6th year. Missing Helio at the start of 6th year, and unaware of her influences on the events in question, she joyfully reunites with Heliotrope after her escape from Finfolkaheem. She genuinely tries to help Heliotrope catch up on her studies this time.

She remains friends with Philo as well, if both remaining incredibly awkward about what “school romance” they may or may not have had. As Drea developed more confidence, even standing up to bullies on her own, her artistic talents expanded to cooking as well so by the time of her graduation, she was more confident as a witch lumps and all.

However, still one with various bad memories and strange dreams plaguing the recesses of her mind.

Magical Potential & Skills

Obderedria has far more magical potential than her faltering school age confidence suggests. She’s capable of tremendous spell casting if she puts her mind to it yet shies away from violent intent.

Spell Artistry - The big breakthrough for Obderedria came from comparing her spells to her artistic talents. Early signs of cosmetic differences include her orange Lumos and retaining some of the melodic qualities learned from Lilian Westminster’s wand when it was borrowed to her in her 2nd year. Aesthetic twists to her spells can involve pleasant scents or sounds, although effects may turn ugly if she’s in a bad mood. This also extends to beauty glamours.

Her most noted artworks are her animated illustrations. Hers is a cartoonist style although she has also attempted classical portraiture. Drew would also be a quick study for magical disciplines that use music as a basis for structuring spells.

Magical Cuisine - Related to the above but distinct is Drea’s talent for cooking. Having once trained under the Flumes of Honeydukes and working at Sugarplum’s Sweets nowadays, her growing knowledge of recipes pulls from various disciplines. Agricultural elements from Creatures, Herbology and Potions. The temporary enchantments, particularly the whimsical affects of wizarding confectionery, are both playful but also tie to partial transfigurations, emotional magic or minor healing. Beyond testing sweets Drea also likes trying her hand at different kinds of cooking.

Hair - Yes, her hair sits in its own category. Permanently adding polka-dots to her hair was the incident that made her and her mum fully realize her potential as a witch. It’s also grown wild a few times, during the aforementioned incident and when Drea fell victim to a ‘Death by Hair’ ritual. It’s been more subdued since then, although it can animate slightly along with her mood. It might respond defensively in an attack. It’s also unusually resistant to magical methods that attempt to alter the pattern away from spots.

Charms - Although not made to Ollivander’s standard, Drea’s original wand highly favored Charms. It’s rare for her to create lasting enchantments outside of the mediums described above. She’s become quite adapt at a wide variety of Charms, limited mainly by her belief to tackle more complicated charm works (such as the Fidelius Charm).

Transfiguration - Once a sore spot in her early years at Hogwarts, Drea became a lot better at Transfiguration once she put her full imagination behind it. Usually short lasting, Drea has a habit of creating ‘functional art’ or highly decorative objects from common transfiguration spells. Any creatures created by spells in this discipline often have some marked unnatural feature.

Herbology - Obderedria took to working with plants surprisingly well for a city kid. Beyond potion or recipe ingredients she’s raised various kinds of unusual or magical plants. She regularly helps with the rooftop planters at Hearth Gardens. One of her noted school projects was magically grafting an apricot and orange tree with her dwarf peach tree, as the potted tree grows all three fruits.

Divination - Drea’s imaginative creativity made her rather proficient with the subject when she started as a 3rd year. This is only scratching the surface, as her Seer ability was long dormant to the point that she considers career diviners, like Eta Pepper, better at the subject than her. Her skill in Divination skews towards dreams, making somnilency one of her strongest yet least understood abilities. She doesn’t have púca-level awareness but many of her visions come in the form of slumbering dreams or waking hallucinations.

Language - Drea is embarrassed to only have a rudimentary grasp of Spanish, given her mother is bilingual. She felt more capable with it as a child until she started attending Hogwarts and was away from home for long periods. She can somewhat attempt Mermish.

Trivia

Character Creation, Tropes, Playlist

  • Tarot Motif: X - The Moon; representing illusion, complexity, uncertainty and clarity. The illustration of the path visible under the moon shows what is known and unknown, a dichotomy of civilization & wild nature. Sometimes considered the card of dreamers, imagination or madness. Upright, caution must be taken to navigate the disturbances of the night. Metaphorically this could represent dangers lurking in new situations, unconquered depths to fears or memories that should be let go, or hidden truths just out of sight yet to be interpreted. Reversed, confusion and deceptions, even non-malicious or self-deceptive acts, have aggravated anxieties. You may feel out of sorts, overwhelmed by paranoia and misinterpretation of your present standing in life, or fallen victim to fear and trickery. However, past these dangers the forces of the night (or darker ambiance) are about to dissipate these perils by providing a liberating clarity of the situation.

  • Zodiac: The Rat; which for Obderedria suggests spirit, delicacy, expressiveness and high fertility. Bright and optimistic, willing to give their all and often treat friends like family. However, the rat may lack courage and assertion, be gullible or submissive. At worst, undetermined or indecisive.

  • Horoscope: Sagittarius; those born under this sign are optimistic, generous, lucky, independent, and creative. They are often big dreamers with outside the box thinking, willing to try new things. A steadfast friend who puts themselves in other people' shoes, trustworthy and straightforward. Rarely would a Sagittarius engage in emotional blackmail. If not outwardly adventurous, they enjoy stretching the horizons of their mind with a good book or movie. However, the Sagittarius can also be restless, clumsy, naive, blunt, avoid times with others and wind up ignoring important details when looking at the big picture.

  • Rocket Orange (hex: f82800) and Spotted-Hair Green (hex: 04802a) are both sampled from the Kirby series of video games, which have no actual names on the palette. Respectively, Kirby Super Star Ultra and Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. Although having nothing to do with Drea’s interests, the series setting of “Dreamland” is evocative of her simultaneously colorful, cutesy, and abjectly terrifying creative artwork.

  • Prior to 2024, both Heliotrope and Obderedria had the exact same number of character posts (approx 220).
