There are two boys in the Class of 2013. Alvis Norling is in Ravenclaw; he's interested in the coexistence of magic and science, yet tends to avoid eye contact because of ever present empathy he has towards others' emotions. Casey O'Doherty is in Slytherin; a highly ambitious spellcaster, yet ashamed of his actual sex and seeking mental defenses to protect his secrets.
Student Legilimens vs Occlumens. Chalk and Cheese. Forming a partnership as fraught with tension over the course of slowly wrought mutual understanding in their 3rd, 4th & 5th years.
Alvis Norling comes across Dingy in the Armor Gallery, the personal steward of Casey O'Doherty. After trying to calm down the elf, the two 3rd years meet. Although Casey doesn't take Ancient Runes, like Alvis, he's been interested in unlocking the defense secrets of old battle armor. An unlikely joint project begins between them. Casey, who had requested to learn Occlumency from Prof Ignan Storm earlier than month (An Apprentice Seeking a Master) recognizes Norling's innate Legilimency.
Returning home after a disastrous Herbology final, Casey finds himself sullied by ink falling from the ceiling thanks to one of his cousins. With Dingy to clean his clothes and Animus Amulet as he sleeps, he makes a shocking discovery the next morning. After almost 7 years of wearing the amulet nigh-full time, his actual body has grown unmistakably feminine. And somehow less sickly than the appearance granted by the amulet. Worse still, his mother Darla lies on death's door. In the midst of planning runic armors with Alvis Norling and prepping for Occlumency lessons, Casey will need to scheme a way to get his mother recovery at St. Mungo's.
Professors Alieen Reid and Tapendra Trishna have been enjoying relaxing on the beach during the trip to Egypt. Alieen surreptitiously tries to play Angry Birds on Tappy's mobile phone but is found out. Alvis asks the Ancient Runes and Astronomy professors (respectively) about symbols he saw at the Temple of the Muses.
Alvis reports on his findings with the input from Prof Reid & Trishna. He suggests a design for the runic defenses within an Egyptian cartouche, based on the power of using someone's name.
After Spellpunk, Casey rushes off a letter to Alvis Norling about their secret project with runes. There is a slight difference with this letter compared to the others.
Throughout the class trip to Egypt, Philo Falkin and Alvis Norling have been tracing the history of "Runner" with the help of Abigail Reid. They sneak off to the tomb of a wizarding pharaoh to get Runner returned. Alvis takes a nasty fall when the floor gives way underneath them, triggering old memories about a caladrius and seemingly worsening his unknown Legilimency. Meanwhile, Prof Reid and Trishna take the long way through the tomb looking for the kids.
Landis Morgan and the Wizarding Blood Alliance enact an attack on St. Mungo's hospital. Garrotting Gas and spellfire erupts over the various floors. While most at the hospital are healers or patients, there are two current students in the building. Ligeia Canterbury has been interning on the Plant & Potions Poisoning Floor; and Casey O'Doherty was visiting his mother. The latter makes use of a runic shield based on Norling's design in the fray.
Prof Aileen's 4th year Ancient Runes class sees her outline a term project into architecture, along with some miffed looks at troublemakers from the Egypt trip. The class joins Durmstrang Professor Ylva Maras in an antechamber near the House Hourglasses to demonstrate a runic bound Age Line. Alvis is in the middle of the circle feeling forces from the runic stones the class uses from the perimeter. Casey, who has a free period, finds himself joining as he passes by.
Following the joint Ancient Runes class, Casey and Alvis catch up about the summer and the runic project. Things sour when Casey can't handle Norling's intimate contact when examining his battle stance, followed by another Legilimens intrusion from the Ravenclaw.
Prof Leopold Sandusky often finds that the 4th year class gets away from him. For once, it seems like a promising lesson as he uses pumpkins to demonstrate the Magnus Nobel family of spells. The kinds used for minor fireworks and wizard crackers, etc. Still, the 4th year drama is strong with many not liking his teaching methods. Added to this, Ambrose Pepper sets off Casey with a jab that leads to a dysphoric episode, then claims he and Alvis must love each other when Casey's demonstration has unexpected results. Which would have resulted in worse payback if it wasn't for Kelvin Watkins needing medical attention for his pumpkin exploding on him, causing class to be dismissed as Sandusky and Naomi Foley escort him to the nurse.
"O'Doherty's flowers were for you, Norling, what you gonna do, love hearts and chocolate?" He asked the Ravenclaw with a smirk. "Come on now, I'm just joking..." He grinned. "It'll explode with a contented sigh like you give when you stare at him instead...!"Ambrose Pepper
Professor Nightingale Kesali has a surprise in store for the 4th years learning the Banishing Charm, one to hopefully help them form stronger bonds. There are strange grubworms that need to be banished out of apples and he warns they are poisonous. The 'poison' being that those that get scratched by them have their hair turn strawberry pink. Alvis and Zoe have a hint of a school romance, and Alvis tries to get back at Ambrose because of the Transfiguration fiasco. And Casey doesn't help matters when he tries nonverbal banishment with his eyes closed, sending a worm right into Zoe's mouth. Pandemonium ensues as students start getting pink hair (and Casey's reaction is even more severe). Prof Kesali calls for an early dismissal and orders the troublemakers to detention.
After the early dismissal from Charms, Zoe and Alvis contemplate how things went wrong. They're getting much closer as friends, especially when Zoe invites Alvis to scratch her 'poisoned' hair which gives off a strawberry scent. Zoe suggests they skip out the first part of their Defense lesson.
Professor Kesali oversees Zoe, Alvis, Ambrose and Casey in his office after the Charms fiasco from the other day. He has them do lines, with restrictions of compliments they must write about each other, and then criticisms.
"Oh, I'm not writing about Alvis," Casey said with a gently amused tone. "I've already finished writing about him. As you may recall I was prompted to start with him. I'm actually taking considerable contemplation figuring how to write about you, Ambrose, so it doesn't sound like you're at the top of a hit-list. Sorry for the delay but you leave me with little material to fit the parameters of the discipline, what with your misplaced judgement call. Wait, never mind, I've got a last sentence. You're getting six, lucky you."
Ambrose Pepper's penchant for baseless gossip would prime him for a successful career writing for Witch Weekly, or The Quibbler.Casey O'Doherty
A very elaborate prank culminates in the infamous Body Swap event. Mysterious powders released during the morning post cause over a third of the Great Hall to swap consciousness; students are in the wrong houses (Juni Zamperia and Obderedria Pienas, Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff), castle staff become students, and even women and men have switched. For some strange reason, Casey's male and female psyches are splintered and can't recall their memories associated with the other identity. Casey (male) swapped with Alvis Norling, Hexy (female) swapped with Heliotrope LeJean, and the actual half-merfolk is shunted into Cap'n Patches, an animated scarecrow belonging to Salem's Champion Mace Steinbeck.
Casey (male) and Alvis Norling rendezvous before class as they both adjust to the events of the Body Swap day. It proves to be quite the emotional yet cathartic confrontation as various issues plaguing their friendship comes to the surface. Including: Alvis Norling's unusual Legilimency talent, Casey's demands to keep the Animus Amulet secret (even if he can't remember why its bad to remove it), Casey's dislike of intimacy, and that Norling's ancestors the Martels made Casey's original amulet.
Casey reports to the Head of Slytherin's office after events where Dingy kept interrupting Transfiguration class earlier that day. Morgan and Sandusky are unsure of what to make of the matter when Casey is unable to to summon his house elf. It turns out Dingy is accompanying Martin to the school, as Headmaster Herschel Reid leaves the business to the professors to sort out. Both Casey and Martin have been misleading about the family's order for Casey to return the ancestral wand to his grandfather.
Landis turned his gaze on Casey, one brow arcing in silent demand of an explanation. "Were you fully aware of this standing order?" he asked, voice lowering to a certain delicacy of phrase which bid Casey to carefully consider his answer. Lurking beneath the silken tone was the unmistakable implication that Casey had lied to both of them. [...]
He nodded to Leopold as the older man began to pour over the documents. If the claim was legal and allowed for the wand's immediate confiscation, then Casey would have no choice but to relinquish the family heirloom. Possibly it might never be returned. After all this, Landis rather doubted Casey would still be the favorite grandson.Landis Morgan
Morgan escorts Casey to his first ever wand pairing, following the events of the 13th. Casey labors under his allergic reaction to Floo Powder. Surprisingly, the two converse freely away from Hogwarts when accounting for Casey's deception about the O'Doherty wand. Just when it appears Casey might be more receptive of Morgan's advice, it takes a considerably lengthy time to match Casey with a wand. They both scoff at Ollivander's last suggestion, Pear & Phoenix Feather, until it leaps out of the box into Casey's hand, demanding spells from him. Casey briefly ascribes it sapience as it is attuned to Hexy's persona.
Finally Landis noticed Casey's unusual silence and gave the boy a somewhat bemused look. Casey had yet to look up from his new wand, and something about his stare was odd. It was not the adoring look of a boy with his first new wand, which Landis hadn't expected from the unexcitable young Slytherin anyways, but it was wide-eyed and too intent.
"O'Doherty," he repeated patiently, though what he would have said after that was unclear - a coin purse shot out of Casey's robe pocket like a bat out of hell and exploded on Ollivander's counter, coins stacking themselves with an overquick zeal. Landis blinked. Perhaps O'Doherty was more excited about it than he thought.
"Are you quite all right?" he asked sharply, though it was clearly less a genuine concern for his adolescent charge and more a gently-worded are we done here or possibly, what is wrong with you.Landis Morgan
At Casey's suggestion from the Body Swap day, Alvis seeks out the visiting Beauxbatons Academic Advisor, Gerard Gries. Catching him after his Mind Magic seminar ends, Alvis inquires about his strange ability. Gries confirms that Alvis is a Legilimens.
In the Ravenclaw common room, Alvis is distracted from homework as he looks at a book about the caladrius bird. Zoe recognizes it as a bird her mother, Joy Torret, has seen used at St. Mungo's for emergency cases. Alvis confides about the strange memories and headaches he's had since the trip to Egypt.
Casey doesn't concede to lousy weather when practicing flying. He probably should have. Alvis is leaving from morning practice for the Ravenclaw team when he spies Casey falling from his broom into the lake. As Casey can't swim, Alvis dives in to rescue him. As the two are almost half drowned rescuing each other, Casey realizes he's lost his Animus Amulet that disguises his feminine-looking intersex form. Unwilling to have Alvis discover this, Casey hides under his invisibility cloak after sending up a signal. Prof Storm arrives to discover Alvis unconscious.
Casey retreats to his dorm after recovering from the plunge in the lake. He has a new problem besides skating by for how Alvis nearly drowned rescuing him. He also has to get used to corrective underwear to hide the feminine parts of his physique.
The Cirque de la Lune has come to Market Draydon during the winter holiday. It's Ringmaster, Jean-Luc St. Laurence, is also the king of the thieves that pilfer from the guests come to see the illusions of the circus. Alvis Norling was picking up an order of gingerbread and becomes fascinated by the circus. Jean-Luc recognizes his magic, as Alvis navigates his web of truths and distractions thanks to his Legilimency. He offers Alvis to come away with them to leave his life behind, prompting memories of the time Alvis disappeared as a child, around the time he saw a caladrius and his Legilimency started to manifest. It's revealed Jean-Luc is the father of the current Charms Professor, Nightingale Kesali.
Alvis has made a major breakthrough in the runic defense project, as penned to a note to Casey sent on Dec 29th. They meet a few weeks into the new term. Casey suggests using the Room of Requirement but is worried about summoning the version of the room he retreats to as Hexy. Thankfully, a simplified dojo is created. Alvis demonstrates his invention in earnest as Casey is prompted to fire spells. He's modified the runic defenses into interchangeable gem amulets used on a vambrace worn over the arm. Most impressively, these amulets can temporarily store the spell absorbed by the defensive runes, allowing the wearer to cast it with only a "Prior Incantato." Alvis contemplates if more than a third of the spell's energy can be captured this way.
Prof Kesali instructs the 4th year class on the Silencing Charm. His father has made him a clockwork bird that the Professor enchanted to divulge secrets. And there's plenty that the bird was provided with, given the detention from November following the grubworm/banishment incident. Much to the collective horror of Zoe, Alvis, Ambrose and Casey. When the Prof instructs the class to write further secrets, Casey isn't about to give the Prof anymore secrets and tries interrogating him. Alvis, having met the Professor's father (Jean-Luc St. Laurence) over the winter, writes about how he misses his son. Once that secret comes out of the bird, Kesali again dismisses the Charms class early to talk over things with Alvis.
At the start of Easter break, Alvis and Casey descend off the Knight Bus to the Norling residence in Northern Shropshire. As a half-n-half family, the Norlings run the Two-Story Books bookshop out of an old mill, with Alvis' dad Orville having a magical workshop in the basement. His muggle mum, Ariadne, greets Casey with a hug. For once the Slytherin is polite about breaking such an embrace. He almost blows things summoning Dingy to move his trunk, as Ariadne Norling has never seen a house elf before.
Late at night, Casey uses his Hand of Glory to creep through the Norling residence down to the workshop. Back in November during the Body Swap day, Alvis recognized the maker's mark on Casey's now lost amulet as being made by his family. Casey has become obsessed with finding the records as he and Dingy search the workshop. Alvis, usually up late, has heard them and realizes what's going on once he can't wake his parents. He catches the guests/would-be burglars when he threatens to douse the Hand with skim milk, which counteracts its magic.
It's an arduous process, Casey admitting to Alvis that he was trying to look for records for the lost Animus Amulet. Alvis clarifies that the original makers were his ancestors the Martels. Casey tries to help search but is conflicted with guilt and dysphoria, knowing that Alvis is on the cusp of learning his deepest secret. Once Alvis finds the original order, he's confused as Casey described the amulet as protecting from a 'magical curse' back in November. Casey lays into him for having delved this far into his secrets, how he hates the efforts he has to take to appear male or female on a given day given his physiology is not of a singular sex. Casey and some unknown past O'Doherty ancestors have needed the amulet to be rendered male. To show that he cares, Alvis asks Dingy if the elf thinks that Casey is really a boy or a girl, startling both. Even beyond the traditional servitude, Dingy has always been devoted to Casey however he chooses to see himself. Alvis and Casey further discover that the Amulets are created by alchemy and need to be paired with their 'brother/sister' half, and wearing the unpaired Animus for so long likely contributed to Casey's aggravated health. It'll take more research than even their runic project. But at the end of it all, Casey is relieved to have Alvis as a confidant, as their friendship grows stronger.
"You’re you. This doesn’t change that, so it doesn’t matter. I'll give you that not everyone would likely see it that way. But that doesn't mean you have to hide from everybody. [...] You're driven, Casey. Far more ambitious than me half the time. When I think of the rune armaments or see you class or every time you strive to get airborne on a broom; you're far more passionate than you let on. You do care about things, I know you care about Dingy. And now, in retrospect I suppose, you care a lot about how others see you. So at school, if everyone thinks you're a boy...isn't that mission accomplished? [...] You're still in Slytherin, you're still in Hogwarts. And you're still my friend. You're my friend no matter how much of a boy or girl you want to be."Alvis Norling
Prof Storm puts the 4th year's spring holiday essays about water safety to practical use by having them file into a boat before sinking it in the Black Lake. The goal is to see how they work as a team. Some try to summon floats or use heating charms to stave off hypothermia. As some count heads Casey isn't seen, having perfected the Bubble Head Charm but ultimately sinking as he can't swim, managing to retrieve Juni's lost wand before succumbing to hypothermia. Moira assists Alvis in diving down and keeping others afloat, although when Ambrose tries to help it triggers more animosity between the latter two. Alvis gets the idea to explode the boat to ride out the waves generated back to shore. Storm's callous treatment of the class, with one last potshot at Ambrose, causes an infuriated Alvis to call him out via Legilimency to Storm's brief disbelief.
Alvis Norling and the Astronomy Club plan for a night of ghost stories before Halloween. Casey narrates an urban legend revamping the Gwyllion Fae story while staging an 'attack from Felinae.' That aspect of Hexy's persona is symbolically rejected.
