Defense Against the Dark Arts is one of the core classes held at Hogwarts and arguably the most infamous. It is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and focuses primarily on Defensive spells and Counter-Curses. Though the choice is often left the the particular professor, Dark Magics and Curse are usually not taught or demonstrated due to ethical concerns.
The class is a must-have for aspiring Aurors and is one of the primary grades the DoMLE looks at when considering candidates.
Classroom
Classes take place on the school's first floor, in a long narrow room lined with pew-like row desks. It is lined with high windows and the professor's office is at the end, accessed via a short staircase. The room is somewhat tighter in nature - lower ceiling, closer walls and less inviting lighting - than the classrooms of the other two spell courses, Charms and Transfiguration.
Due to the nature of the course students often find the desks moved or, in nicer weather, find themselves outside.

Theobald Manwaring (Sept 05 - Nov 08)
Manwaring was a large man who taught for several years. A capable professor, he was generally warm and encouraging towards his students. He left in 2008 to become the head of the Werewolf Capture Unit.
