Flying is a Seminar type class, given to first year students twice per year. It teaches basic broom-handling skills, and a passing grade is required to use a broom on the school grounds. It is strictly pass/fail, and those who fail the first time can retake it in a remedial form in the spring.

It's possible to fail flying for several years in a row, and opt to take the remedial courses. Students who fail the course are not required to pass, but cannot use the brooms or join a house team until they do.

Classroom

Flying takes place outdoors in the fall and against in the spring, usually in one of the larger courtyards. Students are lined up with a school broom at their side and asked to perform basic broom skills.

Class Sessions

2008

In the first class (Sept 2), everyone got acquainted with getting a broom up, and some close-to-the-ground flying. In the second class (Sept 9) we continued to practice close-to-the-ground flying, this time doing much more turning and stopping.
16 September 2009 Falling Properly - Lesson 3,
So far they have spent a great deal of time flying out on the grounds. They're now practiced in turning, stopping, falling and reversing. They've changed their altitude, they've discussed Quidditch, to a point, as well. But mostly they have spent a great deal of time practicing, discussing safety and doing drills.
